Alan Wayne
Partin, M.D., Ph.D
d. Mar 28, 2023
Dr. Alan Wayne Partin, M.D., Ph.D., former Director of the Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital, died peacefully at home on March 28th in Fork, MD. He was 62.
Alan was born on March 16, 1961 to Philip E. Partin and Marilyn L. Partin in Warren, OH. He had a love of football, which led him to a celebrated run as an offensive lineman at the University of Mississippi. He achieved Academic All-SEC honors and received the National Football Foundation UM Chapter Scholar-Athlete Award. Alan earned his BA in chemistry in 1983, graduating Summa Cum Laude .
From Ole Miss, he went on to pursue his Ph.D. (1988) and M.D. (1989), at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, receiving his Ph.D. in pharmacology and molecular science. He wrote 50 manuscripts by the time that he had graduated, and went on to establish himself as a leader in the field of prostate cancer.
Alan's training and career kept him at Johns Hopkins, where he was promoted to Professor of Urology in 1999 and eventually to Director of the Department of Urology and the Brady Urological Institute in 2004. He has published more than 600 scientific papers, acted as editor for a number of texts on the subject, and received a number of outstanding awards. He also developed the Partin Tables, a computer model that utilizes mathematical formulas to help prostate cancer patients get accurate estimates for the success of treatment.
Despite a busy career, Alan also had a love of life that was matched by few. He enjoyed travel and was routinely found visiting friends in foreign countries. He also loved hosting at home. Alan would host the annual residents party at his home, as well as frequent events for both friends and family throughout the years. Guests in from out of town always had a spot in the Partin home, and Alan was always available with a smile and a glass of scotch.
Alan was preceded in death by his parents Phil and Marilyn Partin and brother David Lee Partin. He is survived by his loving wife Vicky, their children Topper and wife Jen, Dane and wife Elisa, David and wife Sara, and Michael and wife Abby, and their families which include several grandchildren, Andrew, Ella, Julia, Cora and Samuel.
