Obituary

Albert Stanley Schindler, age 86, of Lutherville, Maryland passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, with his devoted family by his side. He was born to the late Edith Mildred (nee Hoffman) and Jack Schindler on July 18, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland.

One of his many accomplishments he was most proud of was graduating from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (A Course) in 1955 when it as located at North Avenue and Calvert Street.  This was one of the top curriculums in the country.  As a comparison, his first year of college was completed.

Al worked for the Bureau of Surveys from June 1955 to January 1973.  By the time he was 20 years old, he became the youngest chief of a survey party for Baltimore City.  During this time, he surveyed preconstruction of the Jones Falls Expressway.  In 1973, he transferred to Baltimore Urban Renewal and Housing Agency (BURHA), which later became the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD).  He worked his way up to become Chief of Construction and Buildings Inspection.  Al retired in 1995.

In 1963, Al enlisted in the 175th Tactical Fighter Squadron of the Maryland National Guard stationed at Glen L. Martin in Middle River.  He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant as an Air Policeman and as the Training Sergeant for the Security Police.  His enlistment was up in 1969.

Always very active in kids' sports activities with Cockeysville/Springlake Recreation Council and later Lutherville/Timonium Recreation Council, Al coached/managed boys teams in basketball, baseball, and football and girls teams in softball and basketball.  In addition, he umpired and volunteered to referee countless games.  In his later years, he took great joy in volunteering at the schools of his grandchildren.  Most of this time was spent at Perry Hall Elementary as evidenced by his surplus of Gator attire.

Al was preceded in death by his beloved wife Elizabeth M. "Betty" Schindler.  He is survived by three adored children: John A. Schindler, of Perry Hall; Stephen M. Schindler (Lynn), of Fullerton; and Leslie A. Hartman, of Perry Hall.  Al is also survived by five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, along with cherished nieces (especially favorites Deborah A. Jurkiewicz and Karen Bush-Cullings) and nephews.  Additionally, he is survived by bonus family: Douglas P. Hartman, Tammy Hennessy, Kieran McCracken, and Denise "Footsie" Carter.

The family will receive friends and relatives at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093, on Tuesday, February 27 from 4-7 PM, where a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 28, beginning at 11 AM.  Interment will be private.
