Obituary

Albert Shulley, age 83, of Timonium, Maryland peacefully passed away on Monday, October 31, 2022 surrounded by family.

Al was born in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania to Raymond and Lillian Shulley in 1939.  He was an only child, growing up in Fairfield, Pennsylvania.  Al attended Shippensburg State College, earning his bachelor's degree in education.   While at Shippensburg, he met Carol, who would become his wife for the next 60 years.  He later went on to earn a Masters in Education from Morgan State University in Baltimore.

Al began his career as a teacher in 1961.  He taught high school science in Baltimore County Public Schools for 37 years.  After retiring, Al continued teaching as an adjunct professor at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) for over 20 years.  Over the course of 60 years of teaching, Al touched the lives of thousands of students in Baltimore County, sharing his passion for biology, earth sciences and the environment.

Al had a special interest in marine biology and conservation.  When the National Aquarium in Baltimore opened in 1981, Al was part of the first group of volunteer guides.  He continued weekly volunteer guide work and involvement as an educator and leader at the Aquarium for the next 39 years.   He contributed over 4800 volunteer hours in support of the Aquarium's programs and mission.

When not working, Al enjoyed watching Ravens football games, vacationing in Florida, and testing his luck on day trips to local casinos.

Al is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol; their two children, Steven Shulley of Sparks, MD and Stacy Ziegler and her husband Warren of Perryville, MD; and two grandchildren, Zachary and Bethany.

All services and interment will be private. In memory of Al, the family asks that donations be made to the National Aquarium in Baltimore to support their continued mission of education and conservation of the world's marine environments.
