Obituary

Liz Jackson, born Aleda June Stauffer on Nov. 4, 1925, passed away peacefully at Broadmead on June 29, 2025 at age 99 (36,396 days). She was married for 55 years to Lester Leander Jackson, whom she met at Glenn L. Martin Co. where she worked as an aeronautical draftsman. Liz is survived by her son Jay Jackson and his wife Jo Ann and her daughter Jann Jackson and her partner Mary Pat Brygger. Liz was the proud grandmother of three granddaughters, Jennifer Hyder in Connecticut, Heather Brubaker in New York, Kelly Finlay in Maine; one step-granddaughter, Erin Koch in New York; and three great grandsons and three great granddaughters.

Art was always her passion--a prolific artist her entire life. She worked in many mediums--oils, watercolor, weaving, ceramics, printing, wood and stone carving, and multi-media, inspired by her understanding of the connections between the microcosm and macrocosm. She displayed in numerous art shows and her artwork is now in the homes of many families and friends. She continued painting until just before her death.

Her formal studies included a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Art Education from Towson University. For 20+ years she taught in the Baltimore County School system. Eventually she became a college professor, teaching student art teachers at Notre Dame and Towson State. After moving to Broadmead in 2003, she began 10 years of teaching weekly art class for fellow residents. With her encouragement, she felt everyone is or can be an artist. Her second grand passion was travel; she visited 29 countries on 6 different continents.

As decades long member of Maryland Presbyterian Church in Towson, she served on Session, became president of Women of the Church, taught Sunday School, and served on the Peacekeeping Committee. A particular highlight—she helped obtain a Peace Pole for the church. She took pride in founding the church Great Books group that met for almost 50 years. Her true religion has been kindness all along.

Guided by her strong faith, her love of family, her insatiable curiosity of nature, and her compassion for all people, she was a constant reminder of what life is all about—showing love and caring for others and for nature. Oh, she charmed so many who met her-- such an engaging personality, an ever-present smile, interesting conversation, and most noteworthy, her stylish elegance!

Staff commented on what a remarkable addition she was to Broadmead. Her 22 years here, touched and changed so many lives. She has been admired and loved by her family and friends, and remembered especially for all the gifts of love she has given so generously.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Broadmead retirement Community, 13801 York Road, Cockeysville, Maryland 21030, on Sunday, August 10, 2025 beginning at 2 PM.
