Anna Pappas (née Tsiourtsiouris), 89, of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away on October 4, 2026. Born February 3, 1937, in Velventos, Kozani, Greece, Anna immigrated to Baltimore in 1969 with her beloved husband, Dimitrios, and their three children, Georgios, Markos, and Elaine. She and Dimitrios shared 56 years of marriage until his passing in 2015.
Hardworking and devoted to her family, Anna began her working life farming in her native Greece. After immigrating to Baltimore, she spent 40 years as a cosmetologist and also worked alongside Dimitrios in the kitchen of their restaurant for 30 years. She was an exceptional cook, and feeding the people she loved was one of the many ways she cared for them.
Family was at the center of Anna’s life. She shared a close and loving bond with her daughter, Elaine, and was a constant source of love and strength in her life. Anna endured the heartbreaking losses of her sons Georgios in 1989 and Markos in 1998. Following the death of Georgios, she embraced the raising of his daughter, Marianna, as her own, forming an exceptionally close bond that lasted throughout her life.
Sweet and nurturing, but equally stubborn and feisty, Anna had a wonderful sense of humor. She loved cooking, gardening, talking with friends, and spending time with those she loved. She also warmly embraced Marianna’s husband, Shawn, and his daughter, Forrest, who adored her Yiayia Anna just as deeply as Yiayia adored her.
Anna is survived by her daughter, Elaine Pappas; her granddaughter, Marianna Paterakis (née Pappas) and her husband, Shawn; and Forrest. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dimitrios Zeno Pappas; her sons, Georgios and Markos and her brother, Argiris Tsiourtsiouris.
Anna will be remembered for her strength, humor, resilience, remarkable cooking, and above all, her fierce devotion to the people she loved. She will be deeply missed.
Mrs. Pappas will lie-in-state at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2504 Cub Hill Road, Parkville, Maryland 21234 on Tuesday, October 13 from 10-11 AM with a Funeral Service officiated by Fr. Louis Noplos to begin at 11 AM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please remember Anna with memorial contributions to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church or to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, Texas 75284-0692.
