Obituary

Anne Holston Engle was born on February 7, 1924, to Walter Brown and Mozelle Tucker Holston in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she graduated from E.C. Glass High School and subsequently earned a Bachelors Degree from what was then Randolph-Macon Woman's College (now Randolph College).

She met her husband Walter M. (Wally) Engle, then a student at Hampden-Sydney College, on a blind date in 1943 and they were married in California in 1944. At the conclusion of Wally's military service the couple settled in Towson, Maryland in 1947 where they raised three sons: James, Thomas, and Lawrence. Anne and Wally were charter members of Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, MD, where a life-long passion for golf and duplicate bridge were developed along with many enduring friendships and several Ladies Golf Club Championships. Anne and Wally were founding members of Maryland Presbyterian Church in 1957 where they remained active throughout their lifetime.

In the 1960s Anne returned to school and earned a Masters Degree in Education from Goucher College which allowed her to embark on a 10-year career as a Child Psychologist at Johns Hopkins University which she found very rewarding. Following retirement, Anne and Wally traveled to Bermuda, Spain, Scotland, California, Florida, and Canada, usually taking along their golf clubs where they played at acclaimed courses including Pebble Beach and the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Upon Wally's sudden passing in 1995, Anne took over management of the family's 18-acre tree farm in Baltimore County under a Forest Stewardship Program. She continued to remain active in the community and in bridge and golf groups, and enjoyed spending time and helping with her growing family of grandchildren who lovingly knew her as "Nana."

In 2009 Anne moved to Edenwald Retirement Community in Towson, where she made many friends, enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, and initiated a twice weekly program of duplicate bridge which gave the residents many hours of enjoyment. In addition to bridge, Nana was an avid Scrabble player who was very hard to beat, as her children and grandchildren will attest. Many a game was played on the porch or in the game room at Capon Springs, WV, where the extended family has held reunions since the early 1980s. She was an avid life-long reader with a special fondness for the works of Jane Austen and historical biographies.

Anne passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2021, attended by loving family. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Wally, parents Brown and Mozelle Holston, her dear brother, Walter Brown Holston, Jr., and niece Blair Holston. She is survived by sons James (Carol), Thomas (Meg), and Lawrence (Pam); beloved grandchildren Meaghan (Tim), Bruce (Tania), Rachel, Philip, Benjamin, and Gary; great-grandchildren Lindsay, Bennett, Miles, Kadri, and Erika; niece Berkley Holston and nephew Brown "Chip" Holston.
