Arthur Frank
Greenbaum, Sr.
d. Oct 6, 2022
Arthur Frank Greenbaum of Baltimore, Maryland passed away on October 6, 2022 at the age of 92. Arthur, (also know as Art), was born August 27, 1930 at Baltimore City Women's Hospital to Leon J. Greenbaum, an accountant, and Jessie E. Greenbaum (nee Kilmore), a social worker and music instructor.
Art grew up in Roland Park on Oakdale Rd in Baltimore City. He sang with his 2 brothers in the St. Michael's and All Angels church choir as a child. While attending Baltimore City College, he perfected his swimming skills on the team under coach Ernie Marx. He was elected Maryland "Boy Governor" of the Hi-Y (YMCA) in high school and learned the Legislative ropes from then Governor William Preston Lane, Jr.
After graduation, he went on to study at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1948-1951. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, studied journalism, and was elected editor of the school newspaper, the Daily Tar Heel. He played on the lacrosse team with his brother Jesse at UNC, and was later named Head Coach in 1955, assisting the club team to return to Varsity status. He loved Carolina and was a devoted Tar Heel.
In 1957, he married Charlotte Jones from Salem, Virginia. He was co-owner of The Patio Restaurant and Bar in Durham, N.C., which included a miniature golf and driving range. Later he returned to Baltimore and purchased a property in Hamden, and established a used car dealership (Adjustment Services, Inc.). He served as President of the Maryland Independent Automobile Dealers Association (MIADA) for several years.
After divorcing, he moved to Annapolis and was involved in local politics and beautification in Ward 1, promoting local Aldermen and working with the Clean City Committee with his long-time partner Betsy DeGroot, a Johns Hopkins trained nurse. He had several dogs whom he adored. He often told jokes about Cassie, his chocolate lab who gave "chocolate shakes." Art enjoyed gardening, spending time creating flower and vegetable gardens at Constitution Square in Annapolis.
Arthur and Betsy moved to Mt. Laurel, New Jersey to be closer to her daughter before Betsy passed. Afterwards, he returned to Baltimore, and lived for several years with his daughter Ann, enjoying West Towson with his dog Cassie. After a brief stay in Annapolis, he returned to Baltimore. He passed at Stella Maris in Timonium.
He enjoyed reading the newspaper, especially the Annapolis Gazette and the Washington Post, keeping apprised of local and national politics. He was a frequent contributor to the Gazette, and took pleasure in the comics and "home grown" Editorials. He enjoyed good food and was an excellent cook - his "garbage eggs" were a popular family meal. He loved music, especially jazz and blues from the 1950s, and played the piano by ear. He attended the Annapolis Symphony frequently. He played tennis throughout his life with friends and family. He will be remembered for his enjoyment of practical jokes and his sense of humor, his love of dogs, and his love for his grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his long time fiancée Betsy Degroot, and elder brothers Jesse Kilmore Greenbaum, and Leon Jack Greenbaum. He is survived by his children
Frank Greenbaum (Susan), Ann Greenbaum (Jack Warnick), and Bill Thomas (Wendy), as well as 6 grandchildren; Katie Muhvich (of Denver, CO), Emma Muhvich (of Saratoga Springs, NY), Laura Greenbaum (of Los Angeles, CA), Taylor Greenbaum, Ben Thomas and Matthew Thomas, and numerous nieces and nephews (including Jessica Greenbaum, Tom Greenbaum, Robert Greenbaum)
A memorial service will be held at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A. at 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 from 12:00 PM unto 1:00 PM on Friday, October 14, 2022.
