Arthur Joseph
Woolford, Jr.
d. Aug 18, 2023
On Friday, August 18th, 2023, Arthur Joseph Woolford, Jr. passed away peacefully with his family present at The Dove House in Westminster, Maryland.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Dorothea C. Woolford (nee Schech), children Kimberly Bell (husband Allen), Beth Garner (husband David), Jeffrey Woolford (wife Nicole), William Woolford (wife Teresa), and Kristine Gelazela (husband Matthew). He was lovingly known as either 'Grampy' or 'Hon' by his eleven grandchildren, Zachary (wife Becky), Rebecca, Joshua, Sarah, Brandon, Wyatt, Luke, Phaedra, Cassandra, Caralina, and Mariana.
Art was born on September 27th, 1944, to Arthur Joseph Woolford, Sr. and Emma Pauline Woolford (nee Yungmann) and was raised in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Parkville Senior High School in 1962 and lettered in varsity baseball, basketball, and soccer.
He was drafted into the United States Army on November 18th, 1966. After completing Basic Training at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and Advanced Infantry Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, he served a tour of duty in the highlands of Vietnam providing artillery support to the II Corps Tactical Zone of South Vietnam, assigned to I Field Force Vietnam (IFFV) headquartered at Nha Trang. Having faithfully answered his nation's call, he returned home just prior to Christmas of 1968. For his honorable service, he earned an Army Commendation Medal and achieved the rank of Specialist (E-4).
He worked in hospitality for many years and raised his family in Finksburg, Maryland. He was an avid birder and waterman; he treasured his time crabbing on the Chesapeake Bay. As a lifelong sports enthusiast, he loved watching Baltimore's Orioles and Ravens play to win. Most of all, he loved his country with all of his heart, and personified patriotism.
A Marylander in every way, as a direct descendant of the 17th century arrival of Colonel Roger Woolford of Somerset County, he is a qualifying ancestor as one of the First Families of Maryland.
