Bernard Desales
Frew
d. Nov 25, 2024
Bernard DeSales Frew, affectionately known as Barney, passed away on November 25, 2024 at the age of 90. He was born on September 25, 1934 in Magnolia, Harford County, Maryland. He was the son of Thomas Llewellyn and Florence Mae Frew. He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean (BJ) Frew, his daughter Judy Jones, two grandchildren, Chelsea Woryk (Brendan) & Connor Jones (Diana) and sisters Nancy Angert, Deborah Preston, Patricia Robbins and brother Richard Frew. He is preceded in death by his son Stephen Frew and brothers Thomas L. Frew, Jr., Russell A. Frew, Stanly H. Frew and a sister Jean D. Keeley.
Most of Barney's working years were spent in Bel Air at Shield Press Inc., best known as the publisher of The Aegis, Harford County's weekly newspaper-of-record. There he served in a variety of roles, including circulation projects management. Over the years, scores of high school students found part-time employment at The Aegis, assisting on those days when the newspaper's sections required sorting and bundling after cascading forth from the company's reliable ink-stained press. Barney was one of the last to set type on the old Linotype Machines (Gutenberg Press). Barney was employed for forty years as one of the many longtime employees of the Worthington family-owned business.
Former Aegis Sports editor, Mac Lloyd, recalled Barney as being authentic, genuine and fun to be around. "Barney always had a pleasant word to share. He was a guy's guy. He had a great sense of humor and was trustworthy."
He and his wife, BJ, owned and operated "Petals 'n Posies Florist" in Bel Air for 40 years.
Barney was very proud of his Scottish Heritage and got to go to Scotland to see where his family lived and the church where they were married. Barney was in the Frazer Clan and a member of Highland Titles in Glencoe, Scotland.
Barney loved the outdoors and loved to split and stack wood. He was an avid history buff, reader, golfer and tennis player. He was especially fond of his closest Buddy, Willie, a West Highland Scottish Terrier, who never left his side.
If you knew Barney, then you had a friend. He will be missed.
Contributions can be made in his name, Lord Bernard D. Frew, to Francis House, Sir William Place, St. Peter Port, Guernsey, GY1, 1GX.
