Bonny Jean
Tighe
d. Feb 13, 2026
Bonny Jean Tighe (formerly McMullen), age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 13, 2026, in Timonium, Maryland.
Bonny was born on August 19, 1949, in Toledo, to Marjorie and Joseph McMullen. Her family lived in Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio before settling in Pennsylvania, where she graduated from State College Area High School in 1967.
She earned a B.S. in Math Education from Penn State in 1970 and began teaching high school math on Maryland's Eastern Shore. After moving to California, she met Jim Tighe, and they were married on February 14, 1979.
In 1981, they made Maryland their home, where they raised their daughters, Jessie and Colleen. Bonny taught calculus and other mathematics courses for many years at University of Maryland, Baltimore County and retired in 2025 after 40 years of teaching. She was instrumental in the early development of the Meyerhoff Scholars Program, reflecting her deep commitment to her students.
Diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2010, Bonny completed chemotherapy in 2011 and courageously overcame the disease.
She will be remembered for her love of family and students, her fondness for pink flamingos, her sister trips, her exceptional crab cakes, and the afghans and hats she lovingly knit. She had a keen eye for shoes and jewelry, delighted in finding bargains, and generously shared them with those she loved.
Bonny is survived by her devoted husband, Jim Tighe; her daughters, Jessie Bialek (Tony) and Colleen Tighe; her granddaughters, Clarice, Azalea, and Sylvia; her sisters, Nancy Roberts (Robin) and Peggy DeCosta (Rich); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
