Obituary

Carl C. Stein, U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of WWII passed away on Sunday, May 9, 2021. The recent Cockeysville, Maryland resident, was previously a long-time resident of Catonsville, MD and parishioner of St. Agnes Parish. He was 95 years old. Carl was the beloved husband of the late Margaret "Dots" Fritzges Stein; cherished father of Sister Mary Jo Stein, DC, Amy Stein Mason and her husband Larry and Christopher J. Stein and his wife Betsy; loving grandfather of Nathan and Dennis Mason and Maggie, Lilly, Adam and Jonah Stein; dear brother of Margaret "Sue" Barrett and the late John A. Stein, Anne Stackwick, Richard Stein and Betty Dalton. Carl had a full and varied life, whole-heartedly and
generously participating in all that life brought to him.

Professionally, Carl saw the evolution of two important industries, printing and photography. Over the course of his career in medical photography and later in printing and typesetting, both fields evolved from hands on into digital formats. He took early retirement so he could provide full time care for his wife in her illness. Widowed for 34 years after 23 years of marriage, Carl was a generous volunteer for over 25 years at St. Elizabeth/Jenkins Memorial Nursing Home and over 10 years at Beans and Bread St. Vincent de Paul meal program. He also became a nanny to his first granddaughter, a regular babysitter for all 6 of his grandchildren, and travelled to Florida, Georgia, Missouri and Paris,
France to visit his oldest daughter on her various missions.

During retirement, he pursued life-long hobbies of antique car and clock collecting, filling his house with an assortment of antique clocks that surpassed the collection in the Smithsonian Institute Museum. Carl enjoyed keeping up with his children in hiking, biking and camping until well into his 70's, and in later years, in leisurely walks and reading stories with his grandchildren, and attending their sporting, artistic and school events. He was a generous supporter and well-loved by "all of my daughters" as he affectionately called the many Daughters of Charity he served with and visited over the years.

For the last 6 years, he lived with 4 of his siblings and 2 of their spouses at St. Elizabeth Hall in Stella Maris and then Stella Maris nursing center, where he participated in daily prayer and Mass, bingo, concerts, and many various activities, and daily welcomed residents and visitors from a strategic position on the front benches of St. Elizabeth Hall.

The family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Wednesday, May 12 from 4-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Catholic Community of St. Francis Xavier, 13717 Cuba Road, Cockeysville, Maryland 21030 on Friday, May 14 beginning at 10 AM. Interment will follow at New Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please remember Carl with memorial donations to the Daughters of Charity :
