Obituary

Dr. Carl Eugene Wilson, an Orthopedic Surgeon with medical practices formerly in Hayward, California and in the Bronx, New York, died of end stage renal disease on December 14, 2022, at the age of 85.

Born on December 5, 1937, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Stennis Aline Hendrick Wilson and Everett Bluford Wilson, he was raised in Essex, Maryland where he attended Kenwood High School and studied piano at Peabody Institute in Baltimore. Carl graduated from Williams College in 1960 and medical school at the State University of New York in 1964. After residencies in Pittsburgh, Dr. Wilson practiced in California and later in New York with a special interest in trauma orthopedics. Carl especially enjoyed working with the residents at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx and entertaining them at home or in Little Italy on Arthur Avenue.

Carl liked playing tennis and chess, but his true passion was classical music. He loved to play his late 19 th century Steinway classic grand piano and for more than 20 years Carl and his wife enjoyed subscription concerts at the New York Philharmonic. Carl painted watercolors and never tired of visiting museums and galleries. He was an enthusiastic reader with an insatiable appetite to learn, interested in topics from the sciences to philosophy and contemporary literature. After an adventuresome and insightful tour around the world with longer stops in Sydney and Paris, Carl bought a little house on a hill in rural Maryland, a place the cosmopolitan adored and to which he returned during the pandemic. There he looked back at a life well lived, in a happy marriage and with cat Tommy on his lap.

Carl leaves behind his beloved wife Sabine Wilson. He is also survived by his sisters Carolyn Wilson Heggie and A.W. Farrar, his niece and nephew Victoria Kagler and Walter Heggie and their spouses, many great and great grand nieces and nephews as well as the son and three daughters of his deceased sister Betty Wilson Alford.

A Memorial Service for Carl will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Long Green Baptist Church, 13010 Manor Road, Glen Arm, MD 21057 beginning at 11:00 AM.
