Charles Heckner
Chandler
d. Jul 23, 2023
On July 23, 2023, Charles H. "Pete" Chandler (aka PopPop) at the age of 95 passed from this world to join the love of his life, Mary Helen Chandler (Mimi). They were married for 73 years, their love language was hard for others to understand but that never diminished the love and devotion that he had for her. Charles was the youngest son of Katherine Heckner Chandler. He was a good son and supported his mother from the young age of 14 until her passing at age 96. He developed his many gifts at a young age, he had a beautiful voice and a keen analytical mind. His song was a gift he shared from the time he joined the children's choir and for many years as a cantor in the Catholic Church. In their final years, PopPop would sing to Mimi to calm her. He was given the nickname "Pete" sometime in his adolescence and while we don't know the origin of it, it fit him well. He was our rock- quiet, dependable, intellectual, and kind. His intelligence was recognized at a young age, he went to Poly High School in Baltimore City, completing his coursework at night while working during the day to support the family. He earned his degree from Johns Hopkins University after serving in the Marines. Pete worked for the C&P Telephone Company for over 42 years, he started as a lineman and after returning from the service went into management specializing in communications traffic control. For anyone that worked for or with Pete, they came to understand his honesty and work-ethic, he shared his technical skills and could be counted on to always do the right thing. So much so that he was tapped to serve on the Nixon-Agnew campaign traveling ahead of the candidates arranging communications in each city on their tour. Pete and Helen have three children- Jeanne, Patti, and Pete; five grandchildren- Chris, Dean, Eric, Ben, and Nadiya; one great-granddaughter- Chandler, who carries on his name. During his retirement, he spent his winters in Florida where he learned to golf- he loved the game though he proclaimed that he wasn't very good. He was an avid gardener; he always had a vegetable garden behind the house and shared that hobby with his children and grandchildren. PopPop will forever live in our hearts, we will remember his gentle teasing, quiet wisdom, and generous heart.
