Obituary

Vibrant and loving mother, grandmother, and friend, Charlotte Elaine Grahe passed away on the evening of Saturday, March 12, 2022 at the age of 79. Born and raised in Baltimore, she married James Lloyd Grahe in 1963, and had two children, Jamie and Christine. After she was widowed in 1967, Charlotte attended college and pursued a career helping others as an occupational therapist at Johns Hopkins hospital and upon retirement, she started her own pet sitting business, Wags & Whiskers.

As a faithful member of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Baltimore, Charlotte immersed herself in the religious community and here she developed some of her closest friendships. Charlotte was profoundly spiritual. She believed that after her passing she would continue to feel God's love in extraordinary, ever-expanding, and inconceivably beautiful ways.

As deeply as she was committed to her faith, she was also grounded in the natural world and believed in striving every day for peace on Earth. She cared deeply about other people, the well-being of animals, and the environment. She was generous with her resources, her heart and her time, volunteering whatever she could to support local and international organizations.

Charlotte was a theist and a naturalist, an adventurer, a devoted friend and a lover of art, literature, music, and most of all life. She is survived by her two children, her grandchildren, Amber and Hunter, her brother, Jeoffrey, and his wife, Mary. She is preceded in death by her husband and parents, Olive Levell Kauffman and James Franklyn Smith.

In celebration of Charlotte's remarkable spirit, the family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Thursday, April 7 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A Funeral Mass officiated by Pastor Ray Chase will be held at St. Vincent de Paul Church, 120 North Front Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202 on Saturday, April 9 beginning at 10:30 AM with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please remember Charlotte with memorial contributions to her favorite charities, St. Vincent de Paul Church of Baltimore (donations can be mailed directly to the church at 120 North Front Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21202), Defenders of Wildlife , Heifer International , or with a donation in her honor to a cause close to your heart.
