Terrence William Kane, known as Cuddy, age 63, of Baltimore, Maryland, passed away peacefully on March 8, 2023. Cuddy was born on June 24, 1959, the third son of the late Edward Kane and the late Mary Jane Kane (nee McCarthy). His oldest brother Michael passed in 1980 and his older brother Thomas passed in 1978. Cuddy is survived by his sister Mary Anne Kane-Breschi and her husband Michael, and Barbara Daily and her husband Frank. He is also survived by his nephews Terrence, Samuel, Louis, and Frankie, and his nieces Maggie and Hope. In addition, Cuddy leaves behind a network of devoted friends who remained close and committed to supporting him for many years: Wim and Sandy Cassard, Alice Ann and Jay Martin, Tom Loughran, Margie Poole, and Vicar Jim.
Cuddy attended St. Mary's Govans and then Towson Catholic High School. He then attended St. Mary's College where he played Lacrosse as a standout goalie for the Saints. In his senior season Cuddy often averaged more than 25 saves per game, often keeping Saint Mary's in games vs stronger opponents. "Cuddy had the unique ability to make his teammates want to play hard for him," said teammate Jay Martin. "He was no rah-rah guy. He was just beloved on the field. We all wanted to play hard for him."
After the 1982 season he was nominated for a Rhodes Scholarship by Head Coach Gavin Kerr on behalf of the college. "He had the grades, the athletic ability, and personality." Said Martin. "He just had no desire to go to England to study."
Instead, Cuddy took his college training and experience to assist with the family business, Harbor Boating. Along with his sisters, Cuddy worked with his father to develop their fledgling sailing, paddle boat, and Water Taxi business in the mid-seventies into one of the most popular and successful concessions in the Baltimore Inner Harbor during the most prosperous years of the legendary Harbor Place.
Cuddy was widely recognized on the east coast as one of the premier captains and brilliant tacticians in the sailing regattas of the 1980's and 1990's. Cuddy's skills often brought his team victories against much larger boats. In addition to sailing, Cuddy loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter in some of the most beautiful locations in Western Maryland and the Eastern Shore.
Most importantly, Cuddy was a gentle soul. His last years were marked by a strong devotion to his Catholic faith and cherished memories of his mother Mary Jane. Cuddy's mind was sharp, his sense of humor always at hand, and his heart tirelessly open for his family and friends.
The family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2523 York Rd., Timonium, MD 21093 on Wednesday, March 15 from 3-5 and 7-9 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Philip and James Catholic Church, 2801 N. Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21218 on Thursday, March 16 beginning at 10 AM. Interment private.
