Obituary

On Monday, February 14, 2022, David Paul Crum, age 62, of Lutherville, Maryland passed away after a nine year struggle with prostate cancer.

Dave was the loving son of the late Jack Crum and the late Doris Crum (Keuchen).

Dave was the beloved husband of Patricia Ann Crum (nee Trimble) for 43 years.  He was the adored father of four children; John Charles and wife Emily, Pamela and husband Patrick, Janice Marie, and Stephanie and husband Greg.

Dave was a loving "Pop-Pop" to five grandchildren; Lucien, Guadalupe, Ellen, Ruby, and Calla.  He was their confidant and teacher.  He took great pleasure in his grandchildren's company and antics.

Dave's extended family includes his mother-in-law Margaret and his dear step-family the Terjungs; John, Sue, Becky, Shara and husband Kristjan.

Dave graduated from Calvert Hall College High School in 1977.  There he exhibited a talent for art, especially sculpture.  He later went on to complete an apprenticeship program to become a machinist.  He ultimately became a member of The Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the sponsor of the apprenticeship program he completed.

Becoming a police officer was Dave's childhood dream.  When he was old enough to enter the academy his height, 5' 5", was a barrier to his acceptance.  He would later remark that he was delighted when women were welcomed into police ranks as it meant the end of the height requirement.  In 1998, at age 38, he was accepted as a Baltimore County Police Department recruit.  He was the oldest recruit in the class, for which he got a good bit of light-hearted ribbing from the younger recruits.  Thus began a very fulfilling career as a police officer.  Being an officer for 20 years was everything he hoped for and more---except for the paperwork.  Dave's assignment was as midnight shift officer with Precinct 9 - White Marsh, an assignment he relished.

In addition to his love of police work, Dave loved working with his hands.  He was a skilled machinist.  He enjoyed working with wood, creating and building his own designs.  Dave was a wonderful cook.  Live theater and music were always a part of his life.  Though not a licensed pilot, Dave enjoyed flying lessons in both fixed wing aircraft and helicopters. After trying skydiving, he would joke that he was now known for jumping out of a perfectly good airplane. Dave cherished his many visits to Ocean City, Maryland and Anna Maria Island off the gulf coast of Florida.

Dave was truly a renaissance man. His family, friends and community will miss the brightness, optimism and compassion he brought to all his endeavors.

Family and friends are invited to gather at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., at 2325 York Road on Saturday, February 19, 2022, from 1:00 pm – 2:30 pm for viewing, to be followed by a memorial service.
