David Alan
Sonn
d. Jul 5, 2023
David Alan Sonn passed away peacefully in his home on July 5, 2023. David, a tile contractor by trade who built his company Creative Finishes from the ground up, was so much more. He spent his youth hunting and fishing with his father, Edward John Sonn and his brothers in the backwoods of northern Baltimore County. He was a loving son to his mother, Helen May Edwards. He was a strong, firm, and caring father and grandfather. David, an avid outdoorsman, had vast knowledge about the land, animals, hunting, fishing, and catching crawdads which he imparted to his children and grandchildren. A true craftsman, he taught his children about carpentry. He loved cooking and spent his retirement perfecting his recipes. He loved visiting antique stores with his wife and collecting the most interesting artifacts. He loved his hunting dog, whom he outlived but will rest with in the tree crotch. He loved gardening, especially his vegetable and herb gardens. At home he loved his pond and his fish. He fed the birds, deer, turkeys and his favorite fox, Foxy Girl. He enjoyed catching crawdads in his secret stream. He was loud, boisterous, and hilarious and had a personality larger than life. He told half true or entirely fictitious yarns that always made you laugh at the preposterousness of them all.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Katherine van Dommelen; his children, Caitlin (Gian Saja) and Jonathon Sonn; his stepchildren, Wayne (Melanie) van Dommelen, Audrey (Herb) Clark, and Lauren (Chris); his grandchildren, Eva, Grayson, and Thatcher van Dommelen; his nephew and best friend, Kevin Sonn; his brothers, Billy, Bobby, and Kenny Sonn. A memorial service will be held at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Center, 2325 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093 on Wednesday, July 12, 2023 at 6 pm.
