Obituary

Edward Matsui, age 92, formerly of Timonium, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Sunday January 7th, 2024.

Ed was born in Torrance, California to Tomi and Masanaka Matsui and grew up with five brothers and sisters. During WWII, Ed and his family were relocated to an internment camp along with 125,000 other Americans of Japanese descent. Despite this early experience, Ed went on to live a life of service to his country and community. After graduating from Temple University, he joined the US Army during the Korean conflict, and then began a 32-year career at the Social Security Administration. He held many volunteer positions, including President and Treasurer of the Coachford Community Improvement Association, Director and Treasurer of the Greater Timonium Community Council, Treasurer of the Dulaney High School PTA, driver for Meals on Wheels, and Treasurer of the Japanese American Fellowship Society. Ed also had an entrepreneurial spirit, which led him to found EEE Enterprises, an information technology company that he ran as CEO for 18 years.

Ed valued family, traveling across the country and abroad to gather information as the de-facto family historian. Family reunions were always a top priority, as was reconnecting with fellow Rowher internees and with friends from the Seabrook, New Jersey community where his family settled following the war. Eating out may have been one of his favorite activities, but Ed was the chief cook for family gatherings where everyone clamored for his beef stew, chicken teriyaki, marinated flank steak, "as-you-like-it" chow mein with pan-fried noodles, and Sunday fried rice. Ed loved meeting new people and shared with everyone his own brand of humor, the many photographs he was always taking, where to find the best bargains, and the latest gadgets he had discovered.

Ed is survived by Beatrice, his wife of 65 years; 4 children: Beth Rice of Reisterstown, MD, Elyssa Ferrell (Jack) of Olathe, KS, Adrienne Poulos (Nick) of Hunt Valley, MD, and Matthew Matsui (Karina) of Dallas, TX; 8 grandchildren: Lindsay Bollinger, Kira Ferrell, Jenna Steinberg, Megan Jamison, Benjamin Matsui, Quentin Matsui, Nicholas Poulos, and Max Matsui; and 5 great-grandchildren: Jack, Axel, Kenzo, Riley, and Sullivan. He is survived by his brother Walter Matsui and sister Nakako Takata, as well as many nieces and nephews.  His brother Victor Matsui, sisters Mitty Taniguchi and Sumi Masuda, and son-in-law David Rice preceded him in death. Ed will be missed.

Services to be held at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in a private ceremony. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the local Veterans Affairs center, specifying the Loch Raven location where Ed received such good care. https://www.pay.gov/public/form/entry/101/46400615/
