Obituary

Geraldine Mae Frederick, 91, beloved mother and friend, passed away on January 19, 2025.

Born September 17, 1933, in Pittsburgh, PA, Gere was the youngest of three daughters born to Theodore and Helen Fischer. She was a graduate of the Shaler High School Class of 1951. A few years after high school, she became a flight attendant on a DC3 for Lake Central Airlines, a local carrier with flights between Pittsburgh, PA and Indianapolis, IN.  Longing to be settled in one city Gere accepted a secretarial position Allison Engineering. She was employed with Allison Engineering until she married in 1960.

Gere was the devoted wife of the late Melvin A. Frederick, and a wonderful homemaker. Active with St. Bonaventure's Christian Mothers and later with St. Bonaventure School where her daughters attended. At St. Bonaventure she spent countless volunteering in the cafeteria, helping with school events and supporting her daughters' endeavors. When the time was right, she went back to work and eventually retired as administrative assistant to the store manager at Kaufmann's, Ross Park Mall.

Her passions were family first, sewing, crafts, mystery novels, classic movies, aerobics, and cheering on the Steelers. Her Catholic faith was strong and many times the Steelers became the beneficiary of that faith. She was a loyal friend who offered unwavering support and assistance whenever needed. She never made you feel alone.

Gere was the loving mother of Julie Freshwater (Michael) and Janeen Kawabata (Kurt); dear sister of the late Shirley Dietz and Jean Gahagan; Aunt of David Dietz, Richard Dietz, Patti Barnes, Peggy Gahagan, Pam McIntyre, and Ron Gahagan; cherished grandmother of Ian Freshwater, Pierce Freshwater, Evan Kawabata, and Camille Kawabata. Her face would glow with the mention of her grandchildren's name for they were one of her greatest joys.

A mass to celebrate Gere's life will be held at St. Bonaventure Church, 2001 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw PA 15116 on Saturday March 15th at 10AM. Interment at Mt. Royal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be directed in Gere's memory to The National Shrine of St. Jude or the charity of your choice.
