Germaine "Gerry" Bertha Marks Mentlik: August 21,1931-May 30, 2023
On May 30, 2023, Gerry Mentlik was finally reunited with her beloved husband of 64 years Edward and mother, Bertha.
She was born on August 20, 1931, at home on Washington St. in Baltimore, Maryland to Bertha Meyers Marks and Anthony C. Marks; beloved wife of Edward Norman Mentlik who passed away in 2015; loving mother of Terri and her husband David, Douglas and his wife Robin, and Gary and his wife Karen; grandmother (Nonna) of Kate, Tyler, Ashley Jordan, DJ, Keith, and Danielle; great grandmother (Nonna) of Harper, Harrison, Landon, Wynne, Sloane, Connor, Cooper, Camryn and Jolynn. She was pre-deceased by her sister Bertha Marks who passed away in 1929 and her mother Bertha Meyers Marks who passed away in 2004.
Growing up, Gerry worked at her parent's small deli store in Little Italy serving ice cream and milk shakes on summer vacations. On Saturday's, she and her mom would go to shows at either the Red Wing Theater, State Theater or the Belnord Theater to see dancing, westerns and serials. Their favorite trip, however, was to the Hippodrome Theater for vaudeville where they saw such famous actors as Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope, and Red Skelton. After the show, Gerry and her mom would lunch at a Chinese Restaurant on Eutaw St. and shop on Howard St. at Hochschild Kohns, Hutzlers and Stewarts.
One of her least favorite activities was scrubbing the marble steps to her home. Several times a week!
Gerry graduated from Eastern High School in 1949. Her first job was at Stark Films on N. Howard St. from 1949 -1953 as a bookkeeper. One of her favorite jobs was as a bathing suit model from 1949-1951. Other jobs, over the years, included bookkeeper at the Flaming Pit Restaurant in Timonium and administrative assistant for Ed Mentlik Associates at Greenspring Station Lutherville.
She was married to Edward Norman Mentlik on January 14, 1951, at Calvary Evangelical United Brethren Church at 1 p.m. at the corner of Milton and Madison Baltimore. She was walked down the aisle by her uncle Milton Isaacson. The reception was held at Milton and Elizabeth Isaacson's house in Northwood. Edward's uncle Jerry Kroupa and his combo provided live music for the occasion. They honeymooned in Miami FL for 2 weeks.
The first house owned by the Mentlik's was a brick rowhouse at 1413 Walker Ave from 1954-1959. The second and final house was bought in 1959 and located in Timonium at 113 Springside Dr. It was occupied by the family for 59 years.
Gerry was a devoted family person. Family meant everything to her! This is her legacy. She wanted to give her children what she and Ed never experienced growing up. She was totally involved in their activities; anything from school, sports, scouting, camping, hiking, and church.
Outside of Ed being the love of her life (and her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren), the absolute most favorite thing Gerry was passionate about was the Baltimore Orioles. She started attending baseball games as a young child and never quit. Up until the day she died, she talked Oriole baseball. She was expecting the O's to make the playoffs this year.
In lieu of flowers, Gerry would want everyone to see one Oriole game this year in her honor.
