Gloria Torres-Jones

October 29, 1936 – August 8, 2026

Gloria passed away peacefully at home, with both of her daughters by her bedside.

She leaves behind her sister, Hazel Torres; her daughters Nina Jones and Laura Jones-McDowell and sons-in-law John McCauley and Harold McDowell; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Julio and Nina Torres; her husband of thirty-three years, George Theodore Jones, Jr.; her later partner of thirteen years, Charles Hughes; and her siblings Julio Torres, Lloyd Torres, Lillian Nivens, Laura Stoddard, and James Torres. Born and raised in New York City, she lived briefly in Plattsburgh, New York; Stamford, Connecticut; and most recently Baltimore, Maryland; but she dwelled for longer periods in North Adams and Williamstown, Massachusetts; Denver, Colorado; and Seminole, Florida.

For much of her career, Gloria was an administrative secretary at the National Jewish Hospital in Denver. Before that, she worked at the state welfare office in Adams, Massachusetts. She had a green thumb with plants, and she adored her pet cats, dogs, and birds. She followed the news, voted faithfully, participated in rallies, and donated to National Public Radio. She wrote funny, descriptive letters in neat, distinctive cursive. Gloria loved reading, and she passed that love down to her daughters, indulging them each night in as many bedtime stories as they demanded, and walking them to get library cards as soon as they were old enough to print their names. She also loved movement, especially aerobics and yoga classes and walks in nature with her family. Even after glaucoma and Parkinson’s had robbed her of those enjoyments, she treasured music to her final days. She had a lovely voice, both speaking and singing, and filled her home with songs from the Great American Songbook. She will be missed.
