Obituary

Howland Scott Roberts, Jr. of Cockeysville passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at the age of 81. After graduating from the St. Paul's School for Boys, he attended the University of Baltimore, where he played Division I lacrosse.   The son of a Chesapeake Bay pilot, in Oct.,1963 he was accepted as an apprentice with the Association of MD Pilots and completed Coast Guard boot camp. During his 45 year career as a Chesapeake Bay pilot, he safely and efficiently piloted thousands of ships on the Chesapeake Bay and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.  Scott always claimed that he loved every minute of his career!

After retirement, he walked 4 miles every day on the NCR trail, with a succession of his beloved golden retrievers.  He was an avid fisherman and Orioles fan and was happiest on a beach!  Scott was the eternal optimist, always positive and upbeat, and was never heard to say an unkind word about anyone.

Beloved husband of Polly (nee Benbow) Roberts for 43 years; devoted father of Derek Scott Roberts, loving brother of Jeanne Mangus and her husband Cary Mangus of Surf City, N.C.  and brother-in-law of Robert Benbow (Carol) of Trappe, MD. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Please remember Scott by signing his guestbook.
