Obituary

Jacqueline “Jackie” Lockhart Smith Flournoy of Cockeysville, MD, formerly of Westport and Wilton, CT. passed away July 5, 2026 after 99 years full of life.

She was born November 4, 1926 to Dorothy and Ainsworth Smith and grew up in Brooklyn, NY with summers in Miller Place, NY where she enjoyed horseback riding and learned to sail when her family acquired a daysailer while in her teens. Jackie attended The Woodward School and Packer Institute in Brooklyn before enrolling at her father’s alma mater, Cornell University. It was there she met her future husband, James “Jim” Flournoy. After graduation, they married on October 21, 1950, and settled in Garden City, then Syracuse, then Mt Kisco, NY where they started a family eventually consisting of 3 children, Lynn, Bruce, and Peter. There they met and formed lifelong friendships with their neighbors the Rodgers, Sherrills, Blankenships, and Dunlaps. In 1957, with 2 children onboard and Peter on the way, they had outgrown the house in Mt Kisco and found a house in Wilton, CT. A few years later, Jackie convinced Jim to store the golf clubs and take up sailing in the summer and resume skiing in the winter. They joined a group of Wilton families known ironically as the North Wilton Yacht Racing Association to go weekend skiing, staying at the Sunderland Motel and skiing at Stratton Mountain in Vermont. Sailing turned into a bigger part of life through a progression of boats, Phiasco, Castaway, Obsession and a 2nd Obsession. Weekends sailing and racing and 2 week summer vacations on the boat led to joining Cedar Point Yacht Club where Jackie held several positions including Cruising Class Captain as well as club secretary for 32 years, all while being the primary helmsperson on the boat. She was honored by having the Ladies at the helm race named after her as The Jackie Flournoy Cup.

As the children got to middle and high school, Jackie became involved with the Walter Schalk School of Dance, serving as co-chairperson of the costume committee, sewing and fitting costumes for the annual revues. She also made outfits for the Wilton High School Jazz Ensemble for performances while Peter participated.

In 1978, after all the children had finished high school in Wilton, Jackie and Jim moved to Westport to be closer to the water and the boat. After 42 years there, Jackie made the decision to move to Broadmead in Cockeysville, MD close to where Lynn had settled.

Jackie had a quiet way of showing that there were no limits to what one wanted from life and her genuine kindness and broad smile were her signature.

Jackie was predeceased by her husband Jim, sister, Cynthia Ayers, and granddaughter, Maggie Flanigan. She is survived by beloved children, Lynn (Daniel) Flanigan, and Bruce (Page) Flournoy and Peter (Nancy) Flournoy, 5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Her memory will also be treasured by extended family and countless friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held on September 12, 2026, at 11am, at Broadmead in the auditorium with reception to follow and in Connecticut in November (date to be confirmed) with interment at the Hillside Cemetery in Wilton, CT.
