Obituary

James Joseph DeFilippis, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, teacher and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Glen Arm, Maryland on December 22, 2024. He was 81 years old.

Born to Vincent and Ersilia DeFilippis, James grew up in a home filled with love, faith, and a strong sense of community. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Robert DeFilippis and his cherished daughter, Eileen Patricia Freifelder.

James shared 59 wonderful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Joan Ann DeFilippis (nee Nagle), building a life rooted in love and shared interests. He is survived by his son, Brian James DeFilippis and his daughter-in-law, Heather Frei DeFilippis, as well as his four adored grandchildren: Maurice Edward Freifelder, Brain David Freifelder, Abigail Grace DeFilippis and Jacob Henry DeFilippis. His legacy of love, humor and wisdom will live on through them.

James dedicated his professional life to teaching and inspiring young minds. He taught history at East Hanover Middle School, where he was known for his genuine care for his students. Beyond the classroom, he brought the same dedication to coaching youth baseball and basketball, nurturing not only athletic skill but also sportsmanship and character in countless young athletes.

In his retirement, James pursued his passion for history as a museum curator, combining his love of storytelling with his deep appreciation for the past. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he faithfully cheered for the New York Yankees, the Boston Celtics, and above all, his first love: Notre Dame Football.

James also had a deep affinity for antiques, which led him and Joan to spend much of their retirement exploring Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. There, among its historic charm, he indulged his appreciation for craftsmanship and history, finding joy in discovering hidden treasures.
