Janet Hardie
Harvey
d. Apr 13, 2024
Janet Hardie Harvey passed away peacefully on April 13, 2024, at the age of 66, surrounded by the presence and love of family and friends. Janet was an adored mother, grandmother, sister and friend, and was a source of kindness, stability and strength to all who knew her.
Janet was born March 29, 1958, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to James H. and Frances C. Hardie. There, she was welcomed into Shady Side Academy's first class of women, and continued her education at Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. Her unbridled love of nature brought her to Baltimore in the early 1980's where she worked at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and later joined Irvine Nature Center as the Director of Development. Upon retirement, Janet applied her passion for Baltimore City and her fundraising talent to the redevelopment of Johnston Square and ReBUILD Metro, where she served on the board of directors, co-chaired the Stewardship Committee, and led their $10 million patient capital campaign.
Janet married the love of her life, Dixon Harvey, in 1985, at her family's home in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. Together they raised two children, Bobby and Annie, in Baltimore's countryside and became a beloved "Oma' to her four grandchildren, Dixon, Hunter, Madeline and James.
Janet thrived in the out-of-doors and was equally as comfortable tending to her beloved gardens as she was skiing black diamond runs. She was a dedicated artist and travel enthusiast.
Janet led her extended family through life's ups and downs with a kind heart, a gentle hand and a strong moral compass, and served as a source of strength and guidance to all who knew her. She showed us how to 'live', greeting every person and every moment with warmth, openness, and curiosity and enthusiasm. She was an inspiration to everyone she touched.
Janet is survived by her husband, children, grand-children and three brothers. There will be a service to celebrate her life at 11:00 AM April 26 at the Church of the Redeemer, 5603 N Charles St, Baltimore, MD.
