Joan Goadby
Moore
d. Mar 2, 2025
Joan Enid Goadby Moore, widow of Dr. Joseph M. Moore, died at Roland Park Place, Baltimore, MD, 2 March 2025, at age 104. Born in Perth, Western Australia, she was raised in Brisbane and Townsville, Australia. She recalled making a multi-day trip across Australia as a toddler on one of the first cross country trains. She was a graduate of St. Aidan's Anglican Girls' School, where she excelled in theatre, music, and athletics. She held foundation degrees in music and speech from Trinity College London's program in Australia. After college she worked as a stage and radio actress and a fashion model. To aid in the war effort, she worked as a laboratory technician in Brisbane. One of her duties was to make the new "wonder drug" penicillin.
In 1944 she married Dr. Moore, a US Army surgeon serving in the South Pacific. She arrived in Vicksburg, Mississippi, as a "war bride" in 1946. As a very participatory U.S. citizen, she was active in her church, garden club, local little theatre, historical groups, and her daughters' many activities, including being a Girl Scout troop leader. She volunteered in local, state, and national politics. As President of the League of Women Voters in Vicksburg, she was a representative to the League's national convention in Chicago in 1968.
Before moving to Baltimore, she lived in Jacksonville, FL, Richmond, VA, and, for many years, in West Chester, PA. Body surfing until she was in her 80's, Mrs. Moore was always sought as a tennis partner or swimming companion. She travelled to Europe, Egypt, Canada and back to Australia several times, including, at age 83, to her high school reunion. Growing up near beaches in Australia, she loved her beach time including trips to the Delaware shore with her extended family and their friends.
Mrs. Moore was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bede Spencer Goadby her brothers Geoffrey and Peter Goadby (Judith) and a niece Fiona O'Brien. She is survived by her daughters, Muriel "Jigger" Kratz (husband, John) of Baltimore, MD, and Sandra Mannix (widow of Daniel) of Chester Springs, PA, grandchildren, Erica Kratz, Dr. John Kratz, III, (wife, Dr. Cathy Smith) and Alexandra Mannix (Michael Hasling), great-granddaughters Vivian and Edith Kratz Smith and Penrose Mannix Hasling, sister-in-law Dr. Merle Gynther Goadby, Sandra Clarry and niece Megan Clooney and nephew Warren Goadby.
A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Church, 811 Cathedral Street Baltimore, on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at 3PM. Private interment next to her husband at Blandford Cemetery, Petersburg, VA. Memorials, if desired, to St. James School, 3217 West Clearfield Street, Philadelphia, PA 19132, Brown Memorial Tutoring Program, 1316 Park Avenue, Baltimore MD 21217 or the charity of your choice.
