Joan Margaret Tanko
November 8, 1935 - February 14, 2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joan Margaret Tanko (nee Cenegy), who departed this world from the solace of her home on Wednesday, February 14th, 2024. Born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, on November 9th, 1935, she was the daughter of Louis and Pauline Cenegy. A graduate of Woodbridge High School, she married Louis Peter Tanko, and together they started a family in Carteret, New Jersey. She was the mother of four children — James, Michael (who died shortly after birth), Mark, and Louis. In the 1960's, the family moved to the greater Baltimore area.
Embarking on a second chapter after years of homemaking, she returned to school in her mid-forties to earn her degree and become a registered nurse. In that capacity, she helped countless people until her retirement from St. Joseph's Hospital in her mid-seventies.
In addition to her parents, Joan is reunited in peace with her beloved husband, Louis Peter Tanko, her son Michael, her brother Louis Cenegy, and her sister Nancy Long. She is survived by her brother Lawrence Cenegy, her three children, James, Mark, and Louis, and her four grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Erika, and Natalia, who will forever carry her in their hearts. She is also survived by her adoring westie, Emma.
Joan lived a life characterized by service and care as a nurse, pursuit of artistry, and humor. She was a passionate painter and produced dozens of oil paintings throughout her life. She was also a heavy reader and enjoyed historical fiction. She was extremely fond of dogs, particularly West Highland White Terriers. Joan had a sharp sense of humor and always had a witty reply at hand. She took deep care in the lives of her descendants and their loved ones.
In accordance with Joan's wishes, there will be no memorial. A private viewing is being held for the immediate family.
