Joanne Dorothy "Dotty" Sharp (née Futty) passed away, leaving behind a lifetime of warmth, care, and cherished memories. Born on March 12, 1941, in Marshalltown, Delaware, to Lillian and John Futty, Dotty brought a bright and energetic spirit into the world, carrying it with her throughout her 85 years. Dotty's love and legacy live on through her family. She is survived by her children, Joanne P. "Jody" Sharp (Jennifer Evans), John R. Sharp (Angeleke McElwain), and Bryan A. Sharp. She also leaves behind her beloved sister, Patricia (Futty) Quinn, and brother, Timothy Futty, along with their families and many dear friends.
Dotty was never one to sit still. She enjoyed playing several sports throughout her school years and, as a young woman, attended Wilmington General Hospital School of Nursing, where she proudly played on the basketball team. After graduating in 1962, she began her nursing career in the fast-paced environment of the Emergency Room, starting a lifelong commitment to caring for others. On Valentine's Day in 1964, she married John "Jack" Sharp in her hometown of Marshalltown. Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and service. As a minister's wife and devoted mother, Dotty raised her family while their journey took them from Southampton, New York, to Albany, New York; Newark, New Jersey; and finally Baltimore, Maryland. After settling in Maryland, she returned to nursing and found deep purpose in geriatric care at the former House in the Pines in Catonsville. If you knew Dotty, you knew she was happiest outdoors. Athletic and drawn to nature, she loved exploring parks, visiting campgrounds, and creating lasting family memories under the open sky. She brought that same love of nature home to her garden, filling it with vibrant daffodils, crocuses, hydrangeas, and roses. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will live on in the beauty she loved so much. Each spring daffodil, blooming rose, or well-worn trail will serve as a reminder of her enduring spirit.
Family and friends will gather at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Center, 2325 York Road, Timonium, MD, on Sunday, November 15, 2026 from 1PM until 2PM with a Memorial Service beginning at 2PM. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in Dotty's name to The Maryland SPCA.
