Obituary

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Yiayia, Katina Tsimopoulos. She entered into eternal rest on February 2, 2026 at the age of 84, with her daughters by her side.

Katina was born to George and Hareklia (nee Mellonas) Markopoulos on March 17, 1941. Her birth place was a small village named Paleogratsano, right on the outer skirts of Velvendos, Greece. Forced out by war, the family migrated to Agia Triada, another small village, near Veria, Greece. This is where Katina, her parents and her 4 siblings lived out the rest of their childhood/adult years; Nikos Markopoulos, Ellie Xristodoulou, Sophia Tsilika and the late Stergios Markopoulos.

Hard work was instilled at a very young age as the children worked on family farms by day and went to school at night. Not leaving much time for anything else, they're only refuge was when their father, George, played the clarinet at all of the neighboring villages' "panigiria", festivals, throughout the year. Music was a big part of their lives.

At age 20, Katina married her childhood love, George. They lived in their small village for another year before moving into the big city of Veria. That was also short- lived, due to the fact that George wanted more for the both of them, he wanted to immigrate to the US. So, in 1963, with big dreams and aspirations, they did just that.

In May of 1974, they had their 1st child, a daughter, Erini and in December of 1975 their second daughter, Vasiliki was born.

Both George and Katina worked tirelessly to provide for their family. George, in the restaurant business and Katina, as a seamstress.

Leaving their country at such a young age, Katina did her best to live the life she left back home. She kept the traditions of her culture alive. This was very important for her to be able to pass this down to her daughters. Faith was a big part of her life, always with her prayer books in hand. She was a devoted member of her parish at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Baltimore, Maryland. This is where she raised her family and created lifelong friendships.

As in most Greek families, food is a big part of the culture. She lived for Sunday barbecues, with her brothers Stergios Nikos and their families. It was more than food it was about reuniting the families together. Aside from making traditional dishes, she made her own bread, 10 loaves at a time. She made her own Phyllo pastry, practically every week. The fruits of her labor were not only enjoyed by her and her family, but by her neighbors and friends. Her friends gave her the title of "Spanakopita Queen " in which she wore that badge proudly! She loved all things home, and loved to entertain and host family and friends. Her favorite time of year was spring. She knew her gardening was right around the corner and loved every minute of it.

In 2014, her husband of 52 yrs, was taken by the Lord.

Katina loved her family immensely, especially her four grandchildren; Pantelis, Katerina, Charles and Alexis. She was a loving and devoted Yiayia. She adored her sons-in-law, Nick and Bill. It was always about what they wanted for dinner and she would aim to please!

Though, sadly, dementia took over her life for the past 6 years, it did not take her spirits. At the end, Katina left this world peacefully and will forever be in our hearts. Memory Eternal.
