Lee Ann
Curry
Jun 13, 1931 — Jun 30, 2021
Lee Ann Curry, nee Prendergast, lately of Avon, Ohio, died in the early morning of June 30, 2021, just sixteen days after her 90 th birthday. She died at Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium, Maryland. Her health had declined steadily after a stroke only a few weeks before.
Lee Ann is survived by her three sons, John Michael Curry of Maryland, Matthew X. Curry of Washington State, and Mark G. Curry of New York State. She is also remembered by her sons' life partners, Frances Ramos Fontán, Dura Temple Curry and Susan Dauscher. She leaves four grandchildren, Zachary and Ian Simon-Curry and Hayden and Logan Curry, and one great grandchild, Milo Curry.
Lee Ann is also survived by her beloved sister Sheila Prendergast Leutkehans of Florida, and Sheila's three sons, Thomas, Daniel and Mark, and Sheila's daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
Lee Ann's late husband, the attorney Robert L. Curry, predeceased her by several years. Robert had served for several years in the Probate Court of Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
Lee Ann Curry lived in the Greater Cleveland area for almost her whole life. She was born in 1931 to Leonard and Ann Prendergast and graduated from Shaker Heights High School. She graduated from Western College for Women in Oxford Ohio, where she studied dietetics and played field hockey. After graduation, she completed a year-long internship at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota where she became a certified hospital dietician. She worked professionally as a dietician for over 50 years, working in the Cleveland area for Cuyahoga County, Catholic Charities, and a wide range of area care providers.
Her father, a well-respected dentist and dental surgeon, died when Lee Ann and Sheila were in their early 20s. They and their mother were taken in by Lee Ann's unmarried aunts, Catherine, Bertha, Emily and Marie Ballash of Fairview Park, Ohio. Those generous women had a profound influence on Lee Ann. In turn, she became their primary caregiver late in their lives.
She and her late husband Robert were married in 1956 and lived in University Heights, Westlake, and later Avon, Ohio. Lee Ann loved to travel, and she and her husband visited many European cities, most notably Prague where their son Matthew lived for a time. They also traveled widely in the Caribbean and Central America. Lee Ann made a culturally important trip to Ireland with her daughter-in-law Dura. Lee Ann continued to enjoy travel into her late 80s, making several bus trips with friends around Ohio and beyond.
Lee Ann had a great love of art and culture and was a member and patron of the Cleveland Museum of Art for many years. She and her husband Robert were very active with the Beck Center for the Arts in Lakewood, Ohio for several decades, where she served as a member and officer of the Center's Women's Board. She and Robert hosted and organized the gala opening of the Center in 1975, arranging for the gala to be held on a then unopened stretch of the Interstate-90 highway. The event received wide attention from local news organizations.
Lee Ann loved reading, classic movies and gardening, activities she hoped to pursue when she moved to Mercy Ridge Independent Living in Timonium, Maryland where she lived during her final months.
