Mary Weintraub
Delbanco
d. Jan 23, 2023
Mary Weintraub Delbanco passed peacefully on January 23, 2023, at 102 years of age. Mary was intellectually engaged, concerned about world affairs, generous to friends and family, strong in the face of adversity, and always solicitous of others' wellbeing.
An only child, Mary grew up in Atlantic City, NJ, the daughter of George Weintraub, an editor of the Atlantic City Press, and Violet Cartun Weintraub, a homemaker and civic volunteer. Mary was a proud graduate and lifelong supporter of Swarthmore College. She earned a Doctorate in Education from Temple University and taught remedial reading in Philadelphia for many years before moving to New York City to commence her long, happy marriage to Kurt Delbanco (deceased 2007), a businessman, art dealer and artist. Mary was his able assistant, becoming knowledgeable about African, European renaissance and early 20th century art. To be closer to family, she moved from Manhattan to Baltimore in 2009.
She will be missed by her daughters, Judith Felsten of Hannacroix, NY and Janet Felsten (Andy Lemer) of Baltimore, MD, grandchildren Daniel and Rebekah Lemer; stepsons Tom Delbanco (Jill), Nicholas Delbanco (Elena), and Andrew Delbanco (Dawn), her seven Delbanco grandchildren – Steve, Suzanne, Jennie, Francesca, Andrea, Yvonne and Ben - and 15 great grandchildren. An earlier marriage to Benjamin Felsten ended in divorce.
Donations in her memory may be made to Doctors Without Borders or Swarthmore College .
