Obituary

Mary Downie Freeman, age 90, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of grace, and quiet resilience. She was born on November 25, 1935, in Seaton Delaval, and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, where her early years were shaped by family and the enduring spirit of her community.

Mary carried her English roots with her throughout her life, expressed by her deep appreciation for tradition, and the care she showed to those around her. She had a gift for making people feel welcome with a cup of tea, a listening ear, or simply her steady and reassuring presence. Going "home" to England and spending time with her family was one of her greatest joys.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Harold W. Freeman, with whom she shared a life of companionship, love of sports, and nature.

Mary is survived by her two stepsons, John Freeman (Marion) and Michael Freeman (Maureen); her four children, Andrew W. Freeman (Tina), Heather Freeman-Denmyer (Donald), Geoffrey I. Freeman, and Holly J. Freeman; as well as her seven grandchildren, many additional great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense pride, joy, and purpose.

Mary served as a paraeducator in Baltimore County Public Schools, where her patience and encouragement made a meaningful difference in the lives of students she supported. She approached this work with the same dedication that defined all aspects of her life.

She also found deep happiness in her summers at Camps Awosting and Chinqueka, a place that held a special place in her heart. There, surrounded by nature and the rhythms of summer, she formed lasting friendships and experienced simple joys that remained with her always. Camp was a place where Mary found deep contentment, energized by the presence of young people, and enriched by the stories shared. It was where she felt most at home. She especially treasured the times her grandsons, Shane and Colton attended camp, and the years her great-grandsons, Drew and Todd, joined her in Connecticut. Those moments were filled with laughter, connection, and a shared love for the “Camp” experience.

Once Mary returned to Maryland, she was often visited by her granddaughter Kayla, her grandson Colton, and her great-grandchildren, Avery, Leighton, and Boden. Their visits were simple but deeply meaningful: they brought her the only things she ever asked for; a caramel sundae from McDonald’s and time spent together. Mary cherished those moments and spoke of them often. She would lovingly describe Avery as quiet and determined, Leighton as sweet and kind, and Bodie as talkative and full of fun.

A private remembrance will be held by her loved ones. In honoring Mary’s life, those who knew her are encouraged to carry forward her spirit of kindness.
