Obituary

Mary E Phillips (February 1, 1930 to October 4, 2024)

Mary Elizabeth Phillips, (nee Dansberger) daughter of Roger and Daisy (Keefer) Dansberger, was born on February 1, 1930 in Hagerstown, Maryland. She is now united with her husband of 41 years, Robert (Bob), who passed away October 1993. Mary's family cared for and comforted her during her final weeks.

Mary is survived by daughter Lisa Weitzel and husband Jay, son Scott Phillips and wife Linda, and three loving grandchildren Victoria Weitzel, Trey Weitzel, and Amy Phillips. Her extended family includes nieces Carol Ann Brashears, Nancy Bryant, nephew Todd Cochrane, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. Her sister Dorothy Cochrane and Brother-in-law Tom predeceased her.

A 1951 graduate of University of Maryland, Mary majored in Home Economics and joined Delta Gamma Sorority. She met her husband Robert (Bob) Phillips, a WWII Naval veteran, on a blind date in her sophomore year. Marrying in 1952, they settled in Baltimore where she began her teaching career at Towson High School. They raised their children in Lutherville and enjoyed being involved in sports, school activities and boating with the family. Mary was a long-time member of the Lutherville Garden Club, and an active member of the Delta Gamma Sorority Baltimore Chapter. She moved to the Edenwald Senior Living Community in 2018, where others from her sorority lived.

Bob shared his love of the water with Mary, and they began sailing and powerboating during the 1960's. The family joined the Baltimore Yacht Club in 1977. By 1984, she and Bob were First Lady and Commodore. Mary also served as BYC Mates President. After Bob's passing in 1993, Mary became an Honorary member and enjoyed years of family time on their boat Lisa Anne. The friendships made at BYC were enduring and
cherished.

Mary had a strong faith. The family joined Towson Presbyterian Church (TPC) in 1961 where she assisted with many church functions over the decades including the Meals on Wheels program, serving as a Deacon, and working with the holiday flowers. Her children were confirmed at TPC and all the grandchildren attended Towson Presbyterian Preschool.

A celebration of life will take place on November 22 in the Towson Presbyterian Church Chapel. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Towson Presbyterian Church, 400 W. Chesapeake Avenue. Towson, MD 21204.
