Mary Ellen Cato
Stark
d. May 14, 2026
Mary Ellen Cato Stark February 23, 1944 – May 14, 2026
Mary Ellen Cato Stark passed away on May 14th, leaving behind a world made richer for her presence in it.
Born on February 23, 1944, in Norfolk, Virginia, to Elliot Temple Cato and Joanna Hauk Cato, Mary Ellen grew up in Salisbury, Maryland — a place that shaped her and that she never stopped calling home.
She is survived by her beloved daughter, Heather Stark Noyes, and son-in-law Talbott Noyes, of Baltimore, Maryland; two cherished grandchildren, Hannah and Lilah Noyes, of New York, New York; and her sister, Joanna Abercrombie, and brother-in-law Mike Abercrombie, of Salisbury. She is also survived by the dear friends in Salisbury and Harford County who were lucky enough to know her.
Education was not just Mary Ellen’s profession — it was her calling. She earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Maryland in 1966 and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Delaware in 1980, then spent more than 35 years doing what she loved most: teaching children in the Harford County Public School System. She was recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout her career, and in 1990 was tapped as a master teacher to mentor fellow educators, guiding them in performance-based and outcome-based teaching methods. In 1992, her former students named her to Who’s Who Among American Teachers — perhaps the tribute that would have meant the most to her.
But Mary Ellen was so much more than a teacher. She was fiercely independent, endlessly curious, and always up for an adventure. She snowmobiled in Wyoming, floated over Sedona in a hot air balloon, and dog sledded through Alaska. At home, however, she was happiest with a good book in hand, a cat in her lap and a porch full of bright red geraniums. Her dry humor could light up a room, and her sense of fun never dimmed — right back to the night she won the “Twist” contest at her senior prom.
What her friends and loved ones remember the most, though, was her warmth, her creativity, and her genuine joy for life. And what they will carry forever is something simpler and more profound: she was kind. She was thoughtful. She showed everyone around her — by the way she lived every single day — what it looks like to move through the world with positivity, gratefulness and courage.
She will be deeply missed.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 3rd at 11:00 am at Ashbury United Methodist Church, Salisbury, Maryland. A small reception will follow.
