Obituary

Mary Riggs Wolfe, wife, mother, and grandmother, died peacefully in her sleep on August 28 th in her room at Roland Park Place.  She was 86 years old.

Mary was born in Baltimore and grew up on a farm in Baltimore County.  She was the oldest child of Richard Cromwell Riggs Sr. and Eleanor Allen Reifsnider. Richard died in 1989 and Eleanor died in 2019.

Mary attended Calvert and Garrison Forest schools in Baltimore, and Miss Porter's School in Farmington, CT.  She had a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Goucher College, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and a Master of Arts degree from The University of Baltimore College of Liberal Arts.  She was a gifted painter, particularly in the medium of pastels, and worked for part of her life as a commercial artist (both as a portrait and a graphic artist).

Mary loved people and had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a long-time garden club member and contributed to countless conservation and political causes over the course of her life.  In later life, she spent considerable time in service to others.

Mary met her husband, Eugene Lewis Wolfe Jr., through friends, and they were married in 1960.   They travelled to England and Africa with their children and collaborated on Mary's projects -- Gene built metal structures to support the elaborate artistic floral displays she created.

Kittie Beyer, Mary's lifelong friend, remembers her this way:
"Mary was always fun, from kindergarten to old age, and beautifully artistic, both with artwork and with flowers. She was also much admired at MICA, where we were both students."

Mary enjoyed beach vacations with her children and grandchildren.  She was increasingly dogged by physical problems as she aged, but she faced her illnesses with fortitude.  She relished a tough crossword puzzle (especially with the help of her son), almost as much as she loved a good dessert.

Mary is survived by her sister, Jane Riggs Garcia-Mansilla of Long Island, New York, her son Eugene "Pete" Lewis Wolfe, III and his wife Cathy of Mendham, New Jersey, and their children Levering and Clinton, and by her daughter Mary "Kim" Wolfe Healey and her husband Tom of Bethesda, Maryland and their children Nicholas, Madeline and Andrew.

The family is planning a private celebration of life. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory can be directed to either The Maryland SPCA (3300 Falls Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21211) or to Maryland Public Television ( https://donate.mpt.org/mptv/tribute or by check to: 11767 Owings Mills Boulevard, Owings Mills, Maryland 21117) with "In Memory of Mary R. Wolfe" in the subject line.
