Michael Joseph
Geraghty
d. Feb 26, 2023
Michael J. Geraghty, a retired National Security Agency Staff Officer and US Coast Guard veteran, died on February 26, 2023, at age 88. A former resident of Lutherville for nearly 40 years, he and his wife moved into a retirement community in late 2021.
In his early life, Mike grew up in west Baltimore near the corner of West Pratt Street & Fulton Avenue with his family later moving to the Catonsville area. He was a graduate of the former Leonard Hall Junior Naval School in Leonardtown, Maryland and a 1953 graduate of Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore after which he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. One of his assignments in the Coast Guard included intelligence work which he very much enjoyed and would lead to his future career in later years. After the military, Mike earned his Bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland College Park and a Master's degree from the Johns Hopkins University.
After earning his degrees, Mike began work in the private sector for Maryland Blue Cross Blue Shield for several years until he had the opportunity to return to the intelligence field. Mike spent more than 30 years working as a civilian for the National Security Agency from which he would later retire.
Mike spent the years of his retirement enjoying his large, local family and many friends as well as his various hobbies and interests. He also did some travelling during retirement. Between solo travel for the government and vacation travel, he was able to visit nearly half the US states and 11 foreign countries.
Mike enjoyed model railroading and was known by family and friends for the elaborate Christmas Garden display with audio story and music he originally created in the 1970s that featured a running show for guests. The storyline was based on the concept of two small Bavarian towns preparing for the holidays in the days before Christmas with the eventual arrival of Santa Claus. Mike was also known as an avid storyteller with many special stories to share. His other interests included boating and all things nautical, reading, geography, and the history of the military and intelligence fields.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Debbie (Couchman) Geraghty; daughter Karen Callahan and her significant other Dr. Tracy Bowden; son David Geraghty and his wife Pam; grandchildren Katie Oswalt and her husband Ryan, Kyle Callahan and his fiancé Anna Oglesby, Ryan Callahan, Delaney Geraghty, Grace Geraghty and Jack Geraghty; and great granddaughter Emery Oswalt.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Loch Raven Presbyterian Church located at 9318 Old Harford Road, Parkville, Maryland.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Calvert Hall College, Class of 1953 Scholarship Fund, 8102 LaSalle Road, Towson, Maryland 21286; Loch Raven Presbyterian Church, 9318 Old Harford Road, Parkville, Maryland 21234; or St. Joseph's Nursing Home, 1222 Tugwell Drive, Catonsville, Maryland 21228.
