Obituary

Mildred “Millie” Snead Scheiner

July 8, 1937 – July 6, 2026

Mildred “Millie” Snead Scheiner, age 88, of Columbia, MD passed away July 6, 2026. Millie was preceded in death by her husband of 48yrs, Charles “Phil” Scheiner, her parents Hilbert and Marion Snead, and siblings Donald Snead, Virginia Elkins, Robert Snead, and Carol DeVor.

Born July 8, 1937 in Kilmarnock, VA, Millie moved to Baltimore, MD where she attended Western High School. She graduated in the Class of 1955.

Millie and Phil were married October 19, 1963 in Baltimore, MD. They raised their family in Catonsville, MD and later moved to Columbia, MD. Millie was an avid fisherwoman, acquiring her skills from her great-grandfather Capt Winnie Abbott with whom she spent her childhood summers in Irvington, VA fishing aboard his charter boat Frances C. As an adult, Millies’s love of the water continued. She spent many summers boating, fishing, and crabbing with her family on the Miles River in Saint Michael’s, MD and on the Rappahannock River in Waterview, VA. Millie and Phil also enjoyed traveling the world and spending time in Ocean City, MD.

Millie will be remembered as a person of compassion, selflessness, and genuine care for others. Being from a modest upbringing, Millie was most proud of her accomplishments at the Church Home & Hospital School of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) in 1958. She went on to enjoy a long career as a Medical-Surgical (Med-Surg) nurse at Church Home & Hospital until it closed in 1999. Afterwards, Millie maintained a soft spot for the nursing community. She could often be heard reminding her healthcare team “you know I’m a nurse”.

Millie is survived by her son Steven (Cindy) and grandson Adam; daughter Dawn Duegaw (David), grandsons Griffin (Emmy), Ryan, John (Macie), and great-granddaughter Ellie.

The Church Home and Hospital (CHH) School of Nursing closed in 1999 and the CHH Nursing Alumni Association subsequently joined the Johns Hopkins Nurses’ Alumni Association on December 03, 2004. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a nursing scholarship that bears Millie’s name and requests that donations be made to The Mildred S. Scheiner ’58 Nursing Scholarship using the following link: https://giving.jhu.edu/rememberingmildred

The family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Sunday, July 19th from 4-7 PM with a Nurse Honor Guard Service at 5:45 PM.
