Obituary

Nancy Gideon Clark, born May 16, 1932, died on January 21, 2023 at Broadmead Community in Cockeysville, Maryland.  She was survived by her devoted husband of nearly 63 years, Herbert Taylor Clark; daughter Becky Clark Vail (Kathy); son Paul Clark (Jessica); and daughter Cathy Joyce.  She is also survived by grandchildren Benjamin Clark, Jaime Miller-Vail, and Kate Miller-Vail.  Nancy is predeceased by her son Thomas Clark and parents Roy Morrow and Kathryn Fell Gideon of Palmyra, NJ.

Nancy was born in South Jersey and graduated from Morristown Friends School.  She earned a bachelors degree from Wilmington College in Ohio and a masters degree in social work from Loyola College in Baltimore, MD.   Nancy met the love of her life, Herb, and they were married February 20, 1960 at Westfield Friends Meeting in Cinnaminson, NJ.  From there they moved to Baltimore, Maryland where they adopted 4 children: Cathy, Tom, Rebecca, and Paul.

In the late 1950's, Nancy began her career as a community organizer assisting unwed mothers at the Adams Morgan Project in Washington, DC.  While raising her children with Herb in the 1960's and 1970's, Nancy juggled a busy career and life of service in the Baltimore area.  For her first 20 years in Baltimore, Nancy worked for the Baltimore City Public Schools in high schools for teenage mothers and children.  In 1982, Nancy changed careers and began working for Catholic Charities as a case manager and project director at My Sisters Place and the Park Avenue Lodge for homeless and chronically mentally ill women.  Nancy served as a night director during this time providing mentoring to residents of the shelters.  Nancy retired in 1991 and began spending summers in Celo, NC, where Herb built a cabin for the family.

Nancy has been a lifelong member of the Religious Society of Friends where she and Herb raised their children as members of the Stony Run Friends Meeting.  In 1987, Nancy and Herb transferred their membership to Homewood Friends Meeting where Nancy served on Ministry and Worship and was Clerk of the Meeting.  Nancy also served on the American Friends Service Personnel and Program Committees.

As a Quaker, Nancy believed wholeheartedly in civil rights, women's rights, and all the Quaker values for which she tirelessly advocated throughout her adult life.  As part of her advocacy for Quaker values, Nancy served on the Marian House Board in the late 1970's and the Women's Housing Coalition Board in the 1980's.  She volunteered for GEDCO/CARES since 1995 where she also served on the board.  She volunteered at Viva House and the House of Ruth when it was on St. Paul Street.  She was an active member of the York Road Partnership.

Nancy loved to swim and be outside with nature.  Mostly though, her life was defined by her work and service.  She lived by and cited to us a quote by Kahlil Gibran: Work is love made visible. She believed our work and service is the love of God working through us, of which Nancy was a glorious model for us all.

A celebration of life service for Nancy will be held at Stony Run Friends Meeting, 5116 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21210 on Saturday, February 4, 2023 beginning at 1:00 PM with light refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, please remember Nancy with donations to GEDCO CARES , 1010 East 33rd Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21218.
