Norman James
Bogar
d. Nov 4, 2024
Norman James Bogar passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, surrounded by his loving wife, Ruthanne (nee Kubacka) Bogar, and daughters Erika King and Adrienne Schmitt. Born in Avella, PA, on September 11, 1937, Norm lived a life rich in love, service, and accomplishments.
A dedicated scholar and athlete, Norm attended Linsly Military Institute in Wheeling, WV, before earning a ROTC scholarship to Brown University, where he graduated with a degree in Mathematics and Economics in 1959. At Brown, he played on the men's basketball team, embodying his lifelong values of commitment and teamwork.
After college, Norm served proudly in the U.S. Navy, where he twice circumnavigated the world before his honorable discharge in 1960. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for two decades, then remained engaged as a member of the Navy League Baltimore Council.
Norm began his career with Mobil Oil in Pittsburgh, PA, while pursuing his MBA at the University of Pittsburgh at night, graduating in 1969. His career led him to the Koppers Company Inc. and a move to Baltimore, MD in 1977. He advanced through the ranks to ultimately retire in 1997 as EVP and General Manager of the succeeding organization, United Container Machinery Group Inc.
Known for his principled and compassionate nature, Norm brought warmth and levity to every room. He found joy in sharing stories and laughter with friends, savoring a glass of red wine, building a nice wood fire, grilling a steak, and enjoying his favorite chocolate ice cream. Norm loved the simple pleasures of life, especially a round of golf where he could enjoy a fine cigar.
A longtime member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Blenheim, Norm served as President of the Congregation, committed to his faith and community.
Norman leaves behind his cherished wife, Ruthanne; his daughters Erika and Adrienne; son-in-law Rogers King and grandsons Ben and Miller; son-in-law Greg Schmitt and granddaughters Emily and Kate; sister-in-law Donna Bogar and nephews Bill and Todd.
Norman was pre-deceased by his parents, William M. Bogar and Elsie Marie (Francesio Bogar) Suvada, his brother William Michael Bogar, and his infant son, Norman John Bogar.
A service to celebrate Norman's life will be held on Saturday, November 16th at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 13300 Manor Road, Glen Arm, MD. A private burial will follow in Avella, PA, at a later date.
