Owen Vincent
Cummings, Jr.
d. Jan 15, 2023
Owen Cummings, Jr., devoted father, grandfather and brother, passed peacefully in his sleep on Sunday, January 15, 2023, at the age of 83. Affectionately known best by his nickname "OV," he was a strong man with a big heart who loved entertaining and spending time with his family.
In his youth, OV enjoyed baseball, basketball and spending time with friends and cousins at Highland Lake. A natural leader, he served on many committees in his high school years, but best loved his role as president of his senior class at Torrington High School where will be long-remembered for planning many celebratory reunions over the years. A graduate of Providence College in 1961, he reminisced with great affection about his years at PC as among some of his best with dear friends Frank Macchi, Harvey Hamel, Bill Christie, Bob Owens, and John Hurley. He rightfully boasted that he and his classmates were the first freshman class in PC history to beat the seniors in the college's annual flag football game.
OV worked for 33 years at the Department of Agriculture, and retired as an Executive Division Director in 1996. After raising a family in Fairfax, VA, he and Peggy purchased a beach home in Solomons Island, MD where he loved living for many years on the shore of the Chesapeake. During his years there, he adored entertaining friends, hosting family holidays, and building big fires in the stone fireplace with a Manhattan in hand.
An avid golfer, he played for many years at the Country Club of Fairfax, and in more tournaments than there are golf balls in the pond at #1. The golf group were among his closest friends for dozens of years and to this day. In recent years, he attended many golf luncheons with his long time friends where the golf stories were grand and the laughter infectious as stories unfurled continuously about each and every remarkable 'golf shot.' After attending each of these luncheons, he always remarked that the outing was "the best day all year." When he wasn't playing golf on a weekend, he could be found cheering on his beloved Red Sox or the New York Giants, and spending time with family and friends.
In 2018, OV moved in with his daughter Molly and two granddaughters in Warrenton, VA. Last April, he moved into an assisted living facility near his sister Mary in MD where he could be cared for more formally. Mary dutifully and lovingly looked after him, visiting him nearly every day until his passing. He was dearly loved and well-cared for, which is just as he did for his family earlier in his life.
He was born to May and Owen Cummings, Sr. in Torrington, CT on October 25th, 1939. He was predeceased by his wife of 23 years Peggy Cummings, his sister Claire, and his young son Patrick. In 1994 he married Maxine Purcell Cummings; they were married 14 years. He is survived by his daughter, Molly Cummings Newman, his sister Mary Cummings, and his two granddaughters, Madeline and Kayleigh Newman.
A celebration of life service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Manassas, VA on Saturday, January 28th at 11am with a reception following in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider performing an act of service in honor of OV. He spent a good part of his life working for "a greater good," by caring for both his immediate and extended family, and also by contributing to positive changes in his community both great and small. In his life, OV gave generously to Catholic Charities, National Federation for the Blind, S.M.I.L.E and several other local charities. For a time he served on the board of a local homeless shelter, and volunteered over a year of his time planning and executing a complete renovation of the Country Club of Fairfax in 1992. If you decide to perform an act of service in his honor, we'd love to hear about it so we can celebrate with you as well.
