Obituary

Patricia Lee Schmidt, "Pat",  peacefully passed away on Sunday May 7th, 2023 at her home in Baldwin, Maryland. She had a wonderful life of 88 years.  Over the past month of illness, she was constantly surrounded by her family and friends and she took comfort from faith in God.

Pat was born on April 7, 1935, to Lorraine and Ellsworth Reuling in Baltimore, MD.  She grew up in East Baltimore and attended Eastern High School. It was at this time that she met her husband, the late Frank "Bud" M. Schmidt.  She and Bud were married in Baltimore in 1952 when they began their family. They later moved to Hilledale, MD then Lutherville, MD where they raised their three daughters, Pam, Sharon, and Wendy.  In 1970, Bud and Pat moved the family to the home on East Devonfield Drive in Baldwin, Maryland, where Pat would live for the rest of her life.  Patricia was a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker and a woman of many talents.

After raising her girls, Pat had time to devote to her favorite hobbies of gardening, decorating, sewing, crafting, and tennis. Anyone who came to visit her home was impressed by the beautiful gardens and anyone who knew her was always impressed by her sense of class and style; even in lounging clothes, she looked great with the perfect hat, jewelry and scarf! Pat had an elegance about her and enjoyed fine things like Victorian history, antiques, and collecting lace. Gifted in creativity, Pat delighted in making things look lovely with flowers and lace. She built numerous intricate fairy gardens and little lamps and embellished books. She even designed and sewed over 30 dolls with historical dresses inspired by Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and Downton Abbey, two programs she really appreciated.

With her daughter Sharon, Pat shared an adventurous spirit and a love of travel, taking lots of photos and making memories.  Over the years, she took a trip out west in a motorhome, went on cruises to the West Indies, Bahamas, Canada, and Alaska, and explored New England, Italy, Egypt, and Israel. She also preferred staying in Bed and Breakfasts when she could. With her daughter Pam, she shared a love of books, news, and sporting events. She had an excellent memory and could always be counted on to know current events and what was going on in the world.  With her daughter Wendy, she shared a love of antiques, thoughtful gifts and a good treasure hunt at Good Will or a church yard sale.   She instilled a great sense of economics, wisdom, and value in all of her daughters.

She had a humorous side as well, which the family got to enjoy more during her last days.  Her family will remember her as meticulous, organized, thorough, and thoughtful too.  She was deeply invested in whatever she put her mind to do.  Pat was a member of the Jacksonville Garden Club, and in later years, the Jacksonville Senior Center. She was also a long time member of St. John's Lutheran Church and trusted in Jesus.  Pat was full of grace, a lovely woman inside and out and in all of her activities and travel over the years she made dear friends wherever she went.

As the matriarch of a wonderful large family, her legacy will be shared and lives in us all. Over the years, as her family grew, Pat was always there to be a part of birthdays, sports and school events, weddings and baby showers, and holidays. She was a big help with her 10 grandchildren and we were so blessed that she got to be part of the lives of 13 great grandchildren and even know 1 great-great grandchild!

Patricia is forever treasured as "Mommy" by her daughters, Pam Taylor, Sharon DeLauder and her husband Bill DeLauder, and Wendy Howser and her husband Sell Howser. She is loved and remembered as "Granny Pat" by her grandchildren: Garland Douglas, Ashlee Moneymaker and her husband Jason Moneymaker, Brad DeLauder and his wife Caroline DeLauder, John DeLauder and his wife Kelsey DeLauder, Kim Lego and her husband Brandt Lego, Rachael DeLauder, Kelly Mulhausen, and her husband Drew Mulhausen, Michael Howser and his wife Amanda Howser, Matthew Howser and his wife Jess Howser, and Katie Howser and her fiance Zach Wojtkowiak. Lastly, she is greatly missed by her great grandchildren: Kierstin Douglas, Jimmie Douglas, Lindsey Moneymaker, Zach Moneymaker, Nathan Lego, Samuel Lego, Ava DeLauder, Emma DeLauder, Beau DeLauder, Waylon Mulhausen, Heidi Wojtkowiak, Hayes Wojtkowiak, Walker Mulhausen, her great great grandchild Matthew James Douglas, and her sweet dog Daisy.  Granny was pleased to know that there are also 3 new babies due to join the family soon; great granddaughter Isla DeLauder, great grandson Max Howser, and great-great grandchild Baby Douglas.

She is truly beloved by many and will be missed greatly.  We take great comfort that Jesus is her Savior and she is at home with Him forever.

What a hope we have in Jesus!

A Celebration of Life service will take place on Wednesday, May 31st at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, 3911 Sweet Air Road Phoenix, MD 21131.
