Obituary

Robert Stanislaus Barron of Freeland, Maryland passed away on August 15, 2022 at the age of 69.  Robert, known by nearly everyone as Bob, was born on February 10, 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland to Melvin and Antoinette Barron. He is survived by his wife Valerie, son Teddy, and son Alex and daughter-in-law Astrid.

He grew up in Baltimore City, attending Holy Rosary School and Archbishop Curley High School, and then went on to study at Loyola College (now Loyola University Maryland), later getting a Master's degree from The Johns Hopkins University.

After college Bob spent more than 40 years as a high school teacher. He started and ended his career in Baltimore City but spent nearly all of it with the Baltimore County Public Schools, teaching at Patapsco, Sparrows Point, and Loch Raven High Schools. He taught primarily Social Studies but also covered topics such as health, government, and psychology over the years.

Bob's passion for education and the friendships forged through schools started from a very young age, from celebrating his Polish heritage among classmates at Holy Rosary, to establishing lifelong friendships in a special 8 th grade class, among fellow Friars at Curley, and with other young teachers as he started his career. These bonds between teachers even continued past retirement with regular breakfasts and frequent conversations.

During his long career he influenced thousands of students, including multiple generations of families and local leaders. "Mr. Barron" was known for his dedication to his schools, from the classroom (where he was known for his humor and use of nicknames) to managing school buses and coaching students on the "It's Academic" local tv quiz show. He shared this dedication to teaching and academia with his sons, showing them around his schools and passing on interest and skill in trivia. He was so proud when Alex appeared on "It's Academic" in high school.

Outside of school, Bob loved baseball and the Baltimore Orioles – from spring training to the World Series, on the radio and in person, growing up near Memorial Stadium and the O's success in the 60s and 70s. It was a love he joyously shared with his two sons over the following decades, with hundreds of games from Camden Yards to fields across Baltimore County. As a devoted father Bob was a constant presence, never missing a pick-up, event, or meal.

While Bob never set foot on an airplane, he loved driving around, whether just exploring every back road near home to coast-to-coast trips. He was always ready to help any family or friends in need, especially if they needed a lift – whether to a local appointment or somewhere hours away. Road trips created many fond memories, starting with a honeymoon trip to Florida and followed by Bob and Valerie driving across the country. They shared this travel with their sons, repeated these long-distance trips with Alex and later with Teddy to meet Alex's future mother-in-law.

Bob embraced extended family when he married Valerie in 1974, always ready to help his new parents-in-law, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews. His help often revolved around transportation, including taking mother-in-law Wilma to her hometown of Atlantic City, driving to visit sister-in-law Chrissy in Massachusetts,  and taking Alex and sister-in-law Celeste's oldest sons to Hershey Park in 1984.

Bob will be remembered fondly by the many he has connected with – lifelong friends from school years, fellow teachers, countless students, extended family, and all those who encountered his kindness and gentle manner.

The family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A. at 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Friday, August 19 th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Donald Grzymski at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 18310 Middletown Road, Parkton, Maryland 21120 at 12pm on Saturday, followed by burial at Holy Rosary Cemetery, 7305 German Hill Road, Baltimore, Maryland 21222.
