Robin J.
Breitenecker
d. Jul 12, 2025
Robin Carlysle Jacques Breitenecker, a woman of boundless spirit and grace, passed peacefully on July 12, 2025, in Cockeysville, Maryland, surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Westchester, Pennsylvania, Robin was adopted by Allison and Earl Garfield of Chester, Vermont. She spent her early childhood in the Panama Canal Zone, the daughter of a shipping executive, until age four and then moved for her formative years to the green hills and snowy winters of Chester, Vermont. Vermont's rolling hills and vibrant community captured her heart, drawing her back for frequent vacations, inspired by her mother's cherished antique store now converted and known as the Hugging Bear Inn in the middle of Chester.
Robin's life was a symphony of passions, with her love of horses, skiing, gardening, literature and activism at its heart. An expert horsewoman, she devoted herself to equine husbandry, fox hunting, racing, and competition, earning admiration in the Elkridge and Green Springs hunt clubs. Her vision and tireless dedication transformed Broadacre Farm into a serene haven where horses convalesced amid sprawling, magnificent fields and gardens she tended to daily with love and artistry. She was an avid supporting member of the Garden Club of Twenty.
Robin graduated from the Johns Hopkins Nursing School. While working as a young RN Johns Hopkins Hospital, Robin met Dr. Rudiger Breitenecker, a young Austrian pathologist whose love for the equestrian and snow skiing lifestyle matched her own. Their union blossomed into a vibrant family, raising three spirited sons—Rudiger Jr., Richard, and Roland—affectionately known as the "5 R's." Together, they built a life filled with adventure, laughter, and shared passions.
A woman of refined tastes, Robin found solace in the written word, and in her later years obtained a master's degree in literature from Johns Hopkins University.
Robin served on the Board of Shriver Hall and was passionate for the soaring melodies of classical music, and her love for the arts inspired her to found "Music in the Valley," a world renown classical concert series at St. John's Church Western Run Parish. This thriving series remains a testament to her commitment to enriching her community with beauty and culture through music.
Robin leaves behind a legacy of love and inspiration. She is survived by her devoted sons and their families: Rudiger and Ann Marie Breitenecker of Connecticut, Richard and Sue Breitenecker of Chicago, and Roland and Jooin Breitenecker of New York. She is also lovingly remembered by her cherished grandchildren, Luke, Emily, and Allison Breitenecker. Her memory is also held dear by her lifelong friends who visited her often at Broadmead. The family would also like to thank Dr. Monias and the staff at Broadmead for their professional care. The family would also like to thank her dedicated caregivers, Nancy, Gwen, Violet, and Christine, whose compassion brought comfort in her final days. Thank you also to St Johns Church Western Run Parish and Father Thomas Clement, Father Ruiz-Swartz and Ben Buchanan for their support.
Robin's life was a masterpiece of courage, creativity, and connection—to her family, her horses, and the beauty she cultivated in the world around her. Her spirit will forever gallop through the fields of Broadacre Farm and resonate in the music she loved. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to "Music in the Valley" St Johns Church Western Run Parish to continue Robin's legacy of harmony and grace.
A Celebration of Life will be held at St Johns Church Western Run Parish on Friday, October 3rd, at 11:00 am. From Robins favorite poet. "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain. If I can ease one life the aching, or cool one pain, or help one fainting Robin unto his nest again, I shall not live in vain." Emily Dickenson.
