Rose T. Hijikata died on Sunday, May 28, 2023, at Broadmead, a continuing-care retirement community, in Cockeysville, Md., where she had resided for the past 33 years.  She was 98.

Rose Hijikata and her husband Franklin A. Hijikata moved to Broadmead in 1990 from the St. Paul, Minn., area, where they had lived for 32 years.  They raised their four children, F. Bruce Hijikata, Judith Hijikata, Susan Hijikata, and Heidi Hijikata, there.

Mrs. Hijikata worked as a school nurse for 26 years in the South St. Paul and St. Paul school systems.  Among other responsibilities, she provided services to students dealing with poverty, illness, pregnancy, and other conditions that could make it hard for them to attend school.

She was born in Mountain View, Calif.  When her family was interned during World War II, Quaker theologian and professor D. Elton Trueblood secured her release and arranged for her to attend her senior year of high school at Westtown School (Westtown, Pa.) and then to attend Earlham College (Richmond, Ind.) from which she graduated in 1947.

She then earned a Master of Nursing degree from the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) in 1951.  She met and married her husband while in nursing school.

Mrs. Hijikata is survived by children Judith Hijikata, Susan Hijikata, and Heidi Hijikata.  She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Sandra Hijikata, and four grandchildren, Nathan Cox, Alexander Graber, Sachiko Graber, and Nicholas Cox.  Her husband, Franklin A. Hijikata, and her son, F. Bruce Hijikata, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, 2023, at Broadmead, 13801 York Rd., Cockeysville, MD 21030.
