Ruth Irene Brown was born on December 14, 1934 above her parent's grocery store in east Baltimore and died peacefully at Gilchrist Hospice on July 26, 2023 at 88 years of life. She lived most of her young life in east Baltimore before moving to Loch Raven Village in 1946 to live with her mother (Katherine Elizabeth Brown – deceased), sister (Katherine Elizabeth Hartlove – deceased), and brother-in-law (David E. Hartlove – deceased).
She took summer classes at the Maryland Institute of Art while attending Towson High School, graduating class of 1952 where she met her future husband, Joshua Burton Webster, Jr. They married soon after graduating in October of 1953 and lived in Catonsville for a short time and then moved back to Loch Raven Village to be near her mother and sister. It was during this time she began a freelance graphic art and design studio named "Art Plus." During the 35 years this studio was in existence she also gave birth and raised two sons –Michael and Paul Webster.
In 1968, Ruth and her husband decided to move their family to the country and designed and had their home built which they referred to as Elf Hill.
Ruth was an artist and sculptor and painted, sketched, illustrated, and sculpted in clay throughout her life. She kept multiple photo albums documenting her life and loved to cook. She was well known for the Christmas sugar cookies she and her family made and gave to all who knew her.
Ruth is survived by her beloved husband of 69 years J. Burton Webster, Jr, and her youngest son Paul B. Webster, daughter-in-law Elizabeth D. Webster, and grandchildren Katherine E. Webster, Benjamin P. Webster, and Chasity L. Smith. Her eldest son Michael B. Webster preceded her in death.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023 at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2325 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093 beginning at 3 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Animal Rescue Inc., 2 Heritage Farm Drive, New Freedom, PA 17349.
