Steven Michael Waugh, 81 years of age, of Sparks, Maryland, went to be with his beloved Lord Jesus on Monday July 27, 2026. Visitation will be Thursday July 30th, 2026, 2-4PM and 6-8PM at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A. at 2325 York Road, Timonium, MD 21093. Funeral services will be held Friday July 31st, 2026 at 11AM at Ascension Lutheran Church at 7601 York Road, Towson, MD 21204. Burial with military honors will follow the funeral in the Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.

Steve was born on December 17, 1944, in Story City, Iowa, to Frederick Althan Waugh, Jr., and Gladys Esther (Rafdal) Waugh. He spent his childhood years on the Waugh Century Farm north of Roland, Iowa, until he was 5 years old; and, then, on a farm south of Roland until he was 18 years old. He attended Milford Township Consolidated Country School, which included all 12 grades in its curricula, until it closed for good in 1961; at which time he graduated from Roland High School in 1962. During high school he participated in 22 activities; including musical groups of singing and band, playing the coronet; sports, including baseball and basketball; leads in the senior musical and plays; and a myriad of other activities, including raising grand champion 4-H swine and other projects. Steve then attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, initially majoring in Aerospace Engineering with a minor in Industrial Administration; and, later graduating in 1967 with a degree in Industrial Administration (I.AD) and minors in Industrial Engineering, Finance, Accounting, and Marketing. He also participated in many of the same extra-curricular activities, as he did in high school; while working full time at Montgomery Ward in the farm and garden department, paying his way through college, on straight commission there for his entire college career. Later on, in the early 1970’s, Steve attended graduate school at George Washington University and The American University, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Computer Systems and Business Management.

After college, Steve worked for the Goodyear Rubber Company as an Industrial Engineer at a power transmission belting plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, until he was drafted into the Army in May 1968. After graduating in the top 10% of his basic training class, and finishing his advanced individual training (AIT) as the honor graduate, he served in the Republic of Vietnam as a personal aide to Colonel George S. Patton, III, Commanding Officer of the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment (“Black Horse”), and son of General George S. Patton, Jr., from WWII. Upon returning to America in 1969, Steve completed Artillery Officer Candidate School (OCS) in the top 10% again, so he got to choose his branch as the Signal Corps. Then he served in the Pentagon for 2 years, as a Data Processing Project Officer, where he helped develop the Army’s first Automated Personnel Computer System, along with the “Modern Volunteer Army Project,” which is still in use today. Steve’s 4th and final year, as a First Lieutenant and Captain in the Army, was spent in Bangkok, Thailand, as the Adjutant of a Signal Corps Company.

After Steve was honorable discharged from the Army, in March 1972, he married Karen Lee Kranz, in Alexandria, Virginia, to which one child, Heather Leahannah Waugh, was born, prior to the marriage being dissolved in 1978. During this same time period, he took a job as a Computer Systems Engineer for Electronic Data Systems (EDS), owned by H. Ross Perot, who at the time, was also buying and merging two brokerage firms together on Wall Street. So, during most of the 1970’s, Steve continued to work on Wall Street for EDS; and then mid-way, through the end of the 1970’s he worked as an Operations Officer for Citicorp/Citibank. At this time, he was in charge of implementing state-of-the-art computer hardware and software technology for processing over 2 million checks per night in the Check Processing Division, along with other related processes; and. from the end of the 1970’s through the first half of the 1980’s, he moved from the New York are to Baltimore area, as the Comptroller, and later, Director of Finance of Citicorp Financial, Inc. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Citicorp/Citibank).

In the early part of the 1980’s, Steve met the “Love of His Life,” Lori Seisman Jankalski, a local Baltimore girl, who has been with him ever since. From that time, and until retirement, Steve was a Licensed Insurance Agent and Series VI Investment Counselor for “Sons of Norway”, and General Electric Financial Securities. Also, he owned and operated a small Personnel Placement Agency and a Management Consulting Business, along with his involvement in Real Estate Development and Business Brokerage.

Throughout his lifetime, Steve had been an avid enthusiast in snow and water skiing, boating, bowling, dancing, tennis, horse-back riding, photography, coin and stamp collecting and he was an amateur authority on classic movies made during the past century. He was an active member of 4-H Clubs of America, the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Black Horse Troopers of Vietnam and Cambodia, the Sons of Norway, and, he was known to be a world traveler throughout his lifetime.

Steve is survived by his life partner, Lori Seisman Jankalski, of Sparks, Maryland; one daughter, Heather Leahannah Waugh, of Charlottesville, Virginia; two grandchildren, Willow Sky and Jasper Reed McEligot of Charlottesville, Virginia; in addition, Steve is survived by many cousins.
