Tyrone Walker was born on Friday, the 13th in October of 1939 in Belmont, St. George's, Grenada. He was the third child of Samuel Augustus Walker and Winifred Phillip. He attended Morris School in Belmont and then went on to the Grenada Boys Secondary School (GBSS).
The world knew him as "Ted" Walker. None of his family knows for sure how he came by that nickname, except that he was really chubby as a toddler … like a teddy bear. Unlike kids today, he played in the road with improvised balls, sometimes breadfruits or old leather balls stuffed with paper. This kind of play sharpened his skills, enabling him to make the squad to play at GBSS. He earned fame as an outstanding player at the national level in both cricket and soccer. He represented Grenada on their national teams in both sports in international competitions around the Windward Islands.
In high school he had an affinity for math and biological sciences. After graduating he was an accountant for G. F. Huggins, a wholesale distributor on the island. Later he moved to Trinidad and lived in Barataria, Port of Spain. There he taught high school biology, did tailoring, and played for Paragon, the local professional soccer team.
In 1967, he traveled to the United States, enrolled at Howard University and joined the school's soccer team. He excelled at the sport and was named to the USA "All American Team" in 1970. He graduated from Howard with a degree in Economics. He earned an MBA in Marketing and Business Administration from American University in 1973. He worked for a records distributor during his undergraduate years and drove a cab while getting his masters degree.
He spent his career life in sales. First in life insurance, and later in real estate. He became a licensed broker in 1998, after he became a US citizen in 1996. He remained an Independent Broker until his retirement in 2003, and kept his Broker license until 2022. In his retirement, he earned an A1 certification in computers. For the next few years, he ran his own business building and repairing personal computers.
Throughout his life he was involved in sports. For years he played soccer with Grenadians and Trinidadians from around the area. Some of them, he met during his time at Howard. As a player on the Twilighters team, he traveled to competitions in Canada, Florida, and places in-between. He mentored the younger generation in soccer and passed on much of his skills to his son, Tarik and to his grandsons. He was good on defense in basketball too; and spent lots of hours playing Friday evening ball on courts in Tacoma Park, MD.
Ted married Patricia Duncan in 1969. They had one son and lived in Washington, DC until 2018 when they moved to Baltimore County to be close to their son, grandsons, and daughter-in-law.
He enjoyed travel and took cruises to the Caribbean, Canaries and Mediterranean, as well as Asia and the Emirates. He spent countless hours in the company of friends playing dominoes. He liked all kinds of music and often made tapes for his special friends. He was so small when he started playing "pan" (steel drums) that he needed to stand on a box; thus began his life long love of steel band music. Soca, and Parang were also among his favorites.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Charlene, and three siblings: Leslie, Carol, and Eleanor. He is survived by: his wife, Patricia; his sons, Reynold and Tarik (Rochelle) Walker; his grandchildren, Hannah, Sammie, and Jaxon Walker; his great-grandson, Amias; his siblings, Myrna Alexander (Raymond), Rudy Walker, Osmond Walker, and Marlene Alleyne (Clem); his godchildren, Glenn Sylvester (Stacey), and Natasha Leo; his nieces and nephews, Donald, Peter, and Tahirih Wilson, Shawn Alexander, Shirla LaVille (Al), Tracey Johnson (Spencer), and Joshua Hall; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
