Vera W.
Dischinger
d. Jul 14, 2024
Vera Dischinger died on July 14, 2024 at her home where she has lived for 78 years, just short of her 102nd birthday.
Vera was born in Carroll County, Maryland to Annie Murray Warfield and Raymond Charles Warfield, and grew up near New Market, Maryland. At the age of 17, she moved to Catonsville to live with her aunt and uncle, and became the youngest employee at Western Electric. While taking a class to become a Comptometer operator, she met her future husband, Bernard J. Dischinger, who was then a law student selling Comptometers and teaching how to use them. They married on August 29, 1942, and eventually settled in Original Northwood, where they raised 3 daughters, Pat, Judy, and Janet.
She was beloved by all the children in the neighborhood, who called her "Aunt Vera". She entertained them with puppet shows, and as they got older, they sought her advice and counsel. After her husband's sudden death in 1966, she attended night school to become a court reporter, and was then employed by Gore Brothers. In the 1970's she met Donald Hooper, a developer in Towson, and enjoyed his companionship until his death in 2001. They spent time at the Elks Lodge in Towson, and travelled throughout the mid-Atlantic and Florida.
She was a perfectionist in all she did, giving full attention to details and completing any task she began. She was a dedicated, loving mother to her daughters, always positive and supportive, with a great sense of humor and down-to-earth outlook on life. She loved animals, and was a fan of old country music. She also enjoyed spending time in Ocean City, Maryland. She was very smart, and loved word games, such as "Words with Friends", and "Just Jumble". A week before her death she was still able to solve Wordle in just a few minutes.
Affectionately known as "Girlie" by her immediate family, Vera was preceded in death by her brothers Donald, Dana Rudele (Rudy), Joseph Warfield, and her sister, Margaret Ellis. She is survived by her brother Douglas Warfield, of New Market, Maryland, her daughters Pat, Judy, and Janet Dischinger, all of Baltimore, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Center, P.A., 2325 York Road, Timonium, Maryland 21093 on Tuesday, July 23 from 10 AM - 12 PM with a funeral service to begin at 12 PM. Interment will follow at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens.
