Obituary

Virginia Ellen (Tompkins) O'Rourke, 77, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, at her home in Towson after a long illness. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Frances (Dillaway) Tompkins.

Virginia, affectionately known as "Ginny," dedicated her life to the service of others. Born May 20, 1948, she graduated from Towson Senior High School and earned an associate's degree from Penn Hall Junior College. After working as an occupational therapy assistant for several years, she returned to school in the late 1980s, completing her bachelor's degree at the then-Towson State University. Upon becoming an Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR), she specialized in mental health and geriatrics.

Ginny spent many years as an OTR at Shepherd Pratt Hospital and Johns Hopkins before joining the Spring Grove Hospital Center staff, where she finished her career. Often tasked with working with patients with complex, comorbid conditions, she valued the opportunity to teach the life and relaxation skills she most enjoyed – particularly cooking and gardening. She also enjoyed mentoring college students, often taking on several from her alma mater each year.

Ginny carried those passions into her personal life, where baking was her primary hobby. Her cheesecakes were always in high demand, and despite the clarion call for commercialization, she kept her talents reserved for family gatherings and friends. During her retirement, she dedicated much of her time to volunteering at Art with a Heart and My Sister's Place.

Ginny is survived by her two sons, Kevin and Brian O'Rourke, a sister, Kathleen Tompkins Cwalina, and two nephews, Robert and Christopher Cwalina.

Friends and family will gather for a celebration of her life at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral & Cremation Center, 2325 York Road, Timonium, MD on Saturday, September 20th, 2025 at 11:00AM.
