On Monday, December 7, 2020, at age 89, Dr. Milan Trpis , Professor Emeritus of Pathobiology and Infectious Diseases at the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, died peacefully at home in Cockeysville, Maryland, in the presence of family.  Dr. Trpis was born on December 20, 1930 in Mojsova Lucka, a mountain village in northern Slovakia.  He earned an M.S. in Biology and Chemistry; from Comenius University, Bratislava in 1956; and Ph.D. in Parasitology and Medical Entomology from Charles University, Prague, in 1960.

He performed world-class research in Pathobiology and Medical Entomology in Europe, Africa, North and Central America, Asia and Oceania, publishing over 150 scientific journal articles and book chapters. His employers included the Slovak Academy of Sciences, The World Health Organization, University of Notre Dame, and Johns Hopkins University.  His well-reasoned and innovative approach to experimental design in pathogen control and transmission of parasitic disease earned him numerous honors and awards. His scientific accomplishments have contributed to improvement in the quality of life for millions of people world-wide.

He dedicated his life to science, and search for the truth.  In 1971, during the height of the Cold War, he defied communism and relocated his family to live in the United States. He was as avid lover of art of primitive cultures and classical music.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 64 years Ludmila, his three children Martin, Peter and Katarina and five grandchildren Anna, Elizabeth, Madaleine, Adria and James.
